World Generator Hills

    Recently I have figured out the basics of a ChunkGenerator as well as BlockPopulators, and I made a pretty cool looking hell world, but there is still something I don't understand. My hell world used the random function and tons of 'for' loops to generate obsidian spikes and some other cool stuff, but how do I make a somewhat level land with hills? How can I detect the height of the land around the current block and choose the appropriate height for it? If anyone has some experience with ChunkGenerators, please explain to me the basics of creating a somewhat level land but not completely flat, and maybe give me a basic example.
