what could be the cause of login freeze?

    Recently my server has started to freeze for a while when someone logs in, the "downloading terrain" takes a good 30 seconds, and during that time there is extreme lag for other players.

    what could be the cause of this?

    it was temporarily gone during the previous recommended build (the one before 602) but came back on build 617.

    Something I've seen as well, lately it's been a lot of "Downloading Terrain" for at least 5 seconds or more. I don't know if this could be a MC 1.4 bug, but this happens on my own private server when I'm the only one going on, or 1-2 other people are on.
