I have no idea where to start. What I would like to do is make is so that blocks generated from different structures have different data values. Specifically, I want to be able to differentiate between mossy cobble generated by spawners vs jungle temples vs boulders in podzol biomes, by assigning different data values to them when they're generated and adding lore to the dropped items when they break.

I can handle the part with adding lore to the dropped items when they are broken, but what I have no idea with is how to modify the behavior of the default world generator like this. Any tips/starting points? Is it even feasible?

That's not my main question - my main question is being able to tell what caused a block to be generated by the default world generator.

You could potentially decompile sources and see how the supplied world generator works.
