So... What can be done with maps?

With the release of the new Minecraft 1.6(.4), we now have craftable maps! (and more new bugs than those that were fixed...) I couldn't help but notice that (obviously) all of the map data is stored server-side. What could this mean? Could we upload a picture instead of the actual map, and use a plugin to prevent the map from updating? Could we add player radars that show everyone nearby?

I want to know: What do you guys think will be possible with new plugins once Bukkit is updated? (And MC is fixed) I'm not experienced with plugin development, so I really have no clue, but are there any devs out there who would like to contribute?
