   I mean, I can presume that having a large file will cause lag as it reads it, but what about multiple small files being accessed more often etc?

   You would need a serious amount of files all at a very large size before you noticed lag. However, it also depends on how much memory the server is given to play with and how many other plugins are accessing files as well.
