Plugin Help Plugins sending POST requests

Please move this thread if you feel that it is not in the correct spot.

With all my new plugins, I want to add a feature where it will send a POST request to one of my servers, which will then log it into a MySQL database. The main idea for me here is to check up on how my plugin is doing, and the different versions of the plugin that people are using. No information other than the plugin name, and the plugin version is collected.

My question is, is this permitted? Or would I have to use a plugin metrics such as Essentials? I have also added an option into the configuration which allowed server owners to disable POSTing data.
