It splits everything up into Operations which can be run as smaller bits. So you could run a large edit in segments, not all at once. So it schedules all the edits to not crash the server.
If its all done automatically then its in 99% the same. If you need to specify that you want to do certain operations in batches then it has the same idea but its done differently.
