Nicknaming won't work!

So I need to nickname some defaults on my server, I nick them with a colour, then it says to them that your nickname has been changed, with the colour on it. Then when they talk, it's not there. When that person messaged me later, I could see the colour, but the colour just wasn't working in open chat. Can someone help please!
