Mojang have just released an update to Minecraft, bringing us to 1.2.4.

This update is primarily a bug fix release but does include some nice improvements as well:
    Fixed:
    • Made placing half blocks on existing half blocks (to make a full block) easier
    • Limit framerate on menu screens, no longer uses 100% cpu and make my computer melt
    • Fixed fatal crash for converted worlds to anvil, when there’s blocks at max height
    • Fixed an old bug with signs clearing text while you’re editing them in SMP
    • Fixed crash when logging in while there are blocks at maxheight at spawn
    • Fixed TNT ghosts in multiplayer
    • Fixed storage minecarts dropping enchanted items
    • Fixed crashes on invalid server addresses when joining a server
    • Fixed entities being uninteractable if they existed at login (Multiplayer)
    • Fixed dupe exploit with paintings
    • Fixed furnaces and dispensers dropping enchanted items
    • Fixed the “flickering” of chat as it vanishes off the screen
    • Fixed text rendering over items in the container screens
    • Fixed exploit with jungle saplings (turns other saplings into jungle ones)
    • Fixed launcher opening minecraft dir if the path contains a space
    • Fixed an off-by-one lighting bug
    • Fixed block transmuting (turning one block into another via pistons)
    • Fixed placing mushrooms in daylight, where they can’t survive
    • Fixed redstone lamps dropping powered block items when destroyed while on
    • “save-all” (server) now works even when you have toggled “save-off”
    • Fixed turning half-blocks into full-blocks while you’re standing on them
    • Fixed seed displaying in F3 debug when the seed is unknown (multiplayer)
    • Fixed villager texture changing clientside per profession
    • Fixed falling off ledge corners while holding shift
    • Fixed players falling when reconnecting to servers where they were previously flying
    Added:
    • Chat history and much better chat editing
    • A few new decoration blocks
    • “Back” and “Quit” buttons to OutOfMemoryScreen
    • Made cats more realistic (read: probably annoying). I hope it’s enough to cancel out any joy you may receive from the previous feature!
    • Added a “minimal” debug menu for testing with. Shift+F3 to hide the graphs.
This is just a short announcement to let you know that we are aware of this and are working on it as I type this. Please note: Minecraft 1.2.4 has bumped the protocol version, so it is incompatible with 1.2.3.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

I have to chime in here. Being an owner and operator of a rather large, publicly available, and dynamically run server, I feel I have some knowledge in this regard and would like to say a few simple points.

    1. Managing and handling a community of thousands is not "easy" and I take offense to anyone belittling the 14 to 18 hours daily I or any owner in the same position puts into maintaining and running a server with a staff of voluntary members who take their time to keep the many members of their community happy and enjoying a vastly creative game with countless bugs and upsets. So let's not undermine the efforts of decent owner/admins

    2. The constant drop updates with little to know warning are, at this point, expected. What really gets me is that NO option for SMP servers is given for their general community to rollback to NON-updated.

eg, 100's of 12 to 16 year olds who aren't aware of Mojang's sudden whim to update, click YES on the update.

Sure, that's fine. The problem lies in that all the smp's who simply CANNOT update due to how many plugins required to run any decent survival/creative/pvp etc... are now left with watching console as member after member hits the "disconnected outdated client" message, and unless they know of the forums/website or have some means of being informed "WELL" in advance by Mojang/Bukkit updating the client.

I have no issue with updates in themselves, they are necessary and I am pleased to see a highly skilled team being joined with Mojang and taking this to new levels, but guys, you throw us under a bus here.

    May I suggest?

    1. On every update, at the "Would you like to update now" have a Yes "This may cause you to be unable to connect to servers that cannot update yet" and No.

    or..

    2. They pressed yes and upon seeing "Disconnected, server outdated" They see a button that says, "Rollback to previous version"

Quite simple really, and you can't sit there and say that by updating without much warning and little to no rollback recourse that you don't bring the very servers that amplify bukkit/minecraft overall , to their knees (no arrow jokes)

updates happen all the time. 1.2.3 was only out for like 3 weeks. better get used to this if you're gonna be running a server.

I agree with you in a way. Mojang is the one at fault in all of this. They should give bukkit devs builds before they come out, as this is one of the fastest growing 3rd party server software for their star product. What idiot is doing that. I say that the bukkit devs are responsible to upkeep their project in a timely manner because they have brought so much attention to their platform, and allowed thousands of people to rely on them, promising them updates and more, and then breaking that promise, would be a slap in the face to all the users of their software. I do help, I make plugins, supporting their platform, and contributing to their vast growing library of plugins, coupled with the fact that I run a craftbukkit server, and I would GLADLY offer my time and efforts to the bukkit team, and quote me if you please on this.

    Just my take,
    mac

(also, do not attack people, attack ideas)

I am a server owner of a smallish server, and TBH, I don't have to do much. Sometimes it gets frustrating, and you want to pull out your hair, BUT, in the scheme of things, we're not writing code, or anything. We're sitting on our butts, dragging and dropping files most of the time.

So, why are we all getting in a hissy fit over this? The Twitter accounts of Mojang have been LETTING US KNOW, for a few days now, it's not completely random. If you don't have eyes, I guess it might be random.

If you're whining over a free system, go put on your big kid pants.

Anyway, thank you, staff of Bukkit, for equipping us with the tools to have fun!

I run two servers, I don't need to ask for donations.
On your site you say "Updated server to 1.2.4, still no Bukkit though because the Bukkit Developers are slow and lazy." So even if you are not selfish, you are still an asshole for calling the developers, who last I checked are 97% completed with the CB update.
