Depends. How many plugins/worlds do you have?

I'd say some 100. That only is if your internet connection is fast enough ;)

The slots that your server can carry depend more on your CPU, than your RAM.

The server RAM usage depends on following:
    - The size of your world
    - Number of your plugins and their "weight"
    - Heavy operations, such as work with WorldEdit or DynMap render.

The rest is CPU load and, of course, your Internet connection.

On 6GB RAM, with standart Bukkit build, you can run a server with 50-70 slots with absolutely no lag, as long as you don't have a lot of heavy plugins and your map has a border.
Also, decreasing the view-distance from standart 10 to 6-7 in your server.properties file gives you a huge growth of TPS.
