    Old description (open)
If you enjoy fighting monsters for glorious prizes or just the sheer thrill of battle, you and your friends can now join forces against hordes of Minecraft evils in the exciting gladiator-style survival mini-game MobArena!

Heavily inspired by Deminetix' Fight-plugin, MobArena is a PvE-take on arena-gameplay, with a similar class-based system. Instead of fighting other players, you team up with them to beat oncoming waves of monsters, earning rewards in the process. MobArena can be played alone, or with as many friends as you like!

    Features:
    • Fight oncoming waves of monsters
    • Play alone or team up with friends
    • Earn glorious prizes
    • Customizable classes, rewards and waves
    • Easy to set up
    • Extremely easy to use
    • Very few user commands
    • Supports Permissions and all major economies
    • Supports Spout
    • Supports Heroes
Note: When you post a bug report, please provide a stacktrace/error from the server log/console window. Post this stacktrace in either a pastebin, a pastie, or a CODE-block! The same applies for config-files, permissions-files, etc! Please don't put them directly in your posts, as they become gigantic and annoying to read. If you don't follow this guideline, I might ignore your post!

Wiki - Instructions, commands, FAQ, etc.
I have set up a Wiki for MobArena. It contains a bunch of information and guides on how to set up and customize arenas, an overview of all the commands, how to set up Permissions, as well as frequently asked questions.

New: MobArena now has its own IRC channel (#mobarena @ EsperNet). Click here for a web-based IRC client. Feel free to stop by to get help setting everything up if you really don't understand the Wiki and the instructional video, or to have a chat about MobArena (or anything else, for that matter) :)

    Troubleshooting:
To avoid wasting not only your own time, but mine as well, I expect everyone to do some extensive troubleshooting before posting bug reports. What does this mean?

Try MobArena on a fresh server.
MobArena works perfectly fine when I release it. Sure, there are a few bugs, but it works. If it doesn't work for you, something is most likely wrong on your end. Set up a local test-server, and verify that MobArena works before claiming that it doesn't. When you have verified that MobArena does indeed work, you can start adding other plugins and settings until something conflicts.

    Disable other plugins.
The first thing you need to do is disable all other plugins. If you can't reproduce the bug with other plugins disabled, you know that you have a conflicting plugin. Now perform a binary search on the other plugins, or if you don't know how to do that, just add a couple of plugins back to the plugins-folder, try to reproduce the bug, and if you can't, the conflicting plugin must be in the remaining set of plugins.

    Write down reproduction steps.
Figure out the exact steps to reproduce/trigger the bug. I need precise steps, and as much information as possible, because there are often many things that could be going on. An example of reproduction steps could be:
    1. Type /ma join
    2. Punch the Archer class sign
    3. Wait for someone else to join
    4. Punch the iron block
    5. Type /ma leave before the other player picks a class

    Check the console window/server.log
Make sure you check the server.log file for any MobArena errors or exceptions. If you find any, copy the ENTIRE exception (including all the lines that say "at com.garbagemule.MobArena...") and paste it (with the other information) in a CODE-tag here in the thread.

    Donations:
I develop MobArena for the fun of it and the positive feedback is all it takes to make me happy, but a few people have asked for a link, so if you're one of them, here's a link: Donate - You can donate as much as you want, even down to a few cents! If I get enough donations, I will spend the money on an extra Minecraft account to aid me in developing/testing/debugging MobArena :)

    Changelog:

    Version 0.94.3.24
    • Updated for CB 1337.
    • The repair-delay node is now unused! The reason for this is that it is now possible (with the release of 1317) to cancel block damage in explosions, and still retain the animation and sound! This also means that arenas should be fully pistons-compatible (for arenas that don't use soft-restore or force-restore)! I'm hoping to see some screenshots and videos of shifting arenas! :)
    • You can now right-click signs in the lobby! I finally found a super easy solution to the improperly updating inventory issue with right-clicking class signs. The result is that players can now left- or right-click as they please. This should solve all issues related to players not being able to choose classes, due to spawn region and WorldGuard/Factions/whatever conflicts.
    • It is no longer possible to warp out of the lobby.
    • New per-arena setting: final-wave - Allows for setting a final wave, meaning on that wave, the arena will end, regardless of how many players are alive.
    Version 0.94.3.11 (open)

    • v0.94.3.11 - Updated Register, built against CB 1240.
    • v0.94.3.8 - Added basic leaderboards.
    • v0.94.3.6 - Fixed MagicSpells support - MobArena no longer supports MagicSpells pre-v1.1!
    • v0.94.3.5 - Fixed a bunch of bugs introduced with CB 1185, as well as a couple of minor MobArena bugs.
    • Updated for CraftBukkit #1185
    • Updated economy support (now supports iConomy 6).
    • Added the three new mob types, Enderman/Endermen, CaveSpider/CaveSpiders, Silverfish. They can be used just like the other mob types in the waves.
    • Endermen cannot pick up arena blocks (this is why).
    • Endermen cannot place blocks in arena regions.
    • The per-class permission syntax has been fixed and changed slightly. The Wiki has been updated (clicky).
    • Fixed MagicSpells issues.
    Version 0.94.2 (open)

    • Redstone circuits now work properly in arenas.
    • Lightning now properly strikes on spawnpoints on special waves.
    • Fixed an issue where players somehow warping/cheating out of the arena world get kicked from the server when discovered.
    • Added MagicSpells support. Use the magicspells.yml file to ban certain spells from the arena either for the whole session, or only during boss waves.
    • Fixed the Heroes death conflict. MobArena and Heroes should now play nice together. Further Heroes support is planned for upcoming releases.
    • [COLOR=#1000000]MobArena will no longer support the discontinued Permissions 2.x and 3.x permission systems.[/COLOR] Recommended permissions systems include PermissionsBukkit (defacto standard) or PermissionsEX.
    Version 0.94.1 (open)

    • Added two new boss abilities: 'shuffle-positions' and 'flood'. Try them out!
    • Players disconnecting/crashing during an arena session no longer get corrupted data files due to economy rewards.
    • Weapon durability is now correctly set to "unlimited".
    • Item sub-types (cocoa beans, bonemeal, colored wool, etc.) now work again.
    • Players can no longer join the arena without first picking a class.
    • MobArena now works with spawn-monsters=false again.
    Version 0.94 (open)

    • Completely revamped the waves system! Undeniably the biggest feature in MobArena since multiple arenas in v0.92, the new customizable waves are guaranteed to bring much more awesomeness to your MobArenas. The waves system brings two new wave types, swarm waves and boss waves. The latter is a very elaborate feature, and the whole waves system has been given its own page on the Wiki. Note: MobArena will ignore all old wave settings, but use sane defaults.
    • Revamped the logging system. Instead of logging: true, you can now use logging: yml/xml. The logging system will now keep track of the last session only, but also maintain a collection of 'totals' for each arena. The idea behind these easy-to-parse files is making the stats available on server web pages.
    • Added SuperPerms/PermissionsBukkit support. Note that specifying mobarena.arenas.* and mobarena.classes.* probably won't work, but these nodes are given to everyone by default.
    • Added Spout support. Currently, the only Spouty thing MobArena does is print (some) announcements as notifications/achievements. This should limit the amount of "chat spam" that MobArena produces. Other Spout-features are planned, but don't expect something crazy. Note that MobArena does NOT require Spout!
    • Monsters will no longer target pet wolves. This is a major nerf to pet classes, but they were very overpowered as it was.
    • Fixed item amounts greater than 64 sometimes bugging out. You should now be able to put arrow:1024 for your Archer classes :)
    • Fixed players losing their stored items and/or earned rewards upon disconnecting from the arena.
    • Fixed blocks not restoring when burned by fire.
    • Fixed an issue with entry fees. They should no longer cause any problems.
    • Fixed slimes. That's right! Slimes that spawn as a result of bigger slimes splitting upon death are now considered arena monsters. This also means that Slimes no longer drop slime balls; as intended.
    • Revamped the repairing algorithm. It is now MUCH more sophisticated, and is capable of repairing not only signs and containers, but also torches, doors and beds. Redstone -should- repair properly as well, but it is still slightly buggy.
    • Added support for restorable containers. Registered chests, dispensers, and furnaces will have their contents stored upon arena start, and restored at arena end. This is useful for providing the arena players with chests with e.g. upgrades or food.
    • Added new commands (for the feature above) - /ma addcontainer <name>, /ma delcontainer <name>, /ma containers. These commands work much like the the spawnpoint commands. To add a container, simply look at the container and type /ma addcontainer <name>.

Hey Garbagemule, great mod! Put it on my server today and me and a couple friends of mine had a blast.

So, thank you first and foremost.

Secondly, is there a way to give enchanted weapons/armor as a reward? Special blocks like chiseled sandstone or cracked stone brick? Any possibility of utilizing the ID #s vs the names? Since Chiseled Sandstone 1 and Chiseled Sandstone 2 are both coming up as (sandstone_chiseled)?

OK, found what I consider to be a bug... If you hop from arena to arena, you then have to '/ma leave' multiple times to get your original gamemode and inventory back. You even end up bouncing between the spectator areas. For example:
    1. /ma j arena1
    2. Play the game to completions (end up in spectator area)
    3. /ma j arena2
    4. Play the game to completions (end up in spectator area)
    5. /ma j arena3
    6. Play the game to completions (end up in spectator area)
    7. /ma leave - does not get your location, gm or inventory back!
    8. /ma leave
    9. /ma leave - restores original location, gm, and inventory

garbagemule: That was a duh moment... I read everything except that. I re-read one of the pages and saw that you could do the item numbers as well, the FAQ was very useful for the enchanted items thing.

I am however trying to figure out how I can give the various skulls and or a Nether Star... I don't seem to be getting those. It says "Could not add null reward. Please check the config." in the console...? Please see the rewards code below.

    Code:
            rewards:
                waves:
                    every:
                        '3': gold_ingot:5, iron_ingot:5, feather:5,
                        '5': lapis_block, sponge:5, emerald
                        '10': gold_ingot:10, diamond, 397, 2256, 2257, 2258, 2259, 2260, 2261, 2262, 2263, 2264, 2265, 2266, 2267
                        '20': 397:1:1
                    after:
                        '7': iron_sword, iron_pickaxe, iron_axe, 302, 303, 304, 305
                        '13': diamond_sword 16:5;19:2;20:2, diamond_pick, diamond_axe, emerald_block, 397:2:1, 310, 311, 312, 313
                        '16': diamond_block, ender_chest
                        '20': 397:1:1
                        '25': 397:2:1
                        '30': 399
EDIT: Got it figured out... I just did 397 to see what would come up and it was Skull_Item. I just used "skull_item:2:1" to denote Zombie Head, qty:1. :)

Bobcat00 Definitely a bug. I'll look into it after exams. Thanks.

sniperdoc The error you're experiencing is a result of the snakeyaml parser interpreting 397:2:1 as a number (which it then rewrites) rather than a string of characters, and when MobArena then asks for a string, it gets nothing and reports a null reward. This is something that will be a non-issue in 1.0, as I have written a custom, specialized parser that allows this kind of notation.

garbagemule: I'm really loving this plugin btw... all my players are really enjoying the game more because of the rewards I'm able to hand out. Some items that are virtually impossible to make or find are now a little easier to get, thereby allowing them to make a few things that would be very rare... so thanks again.

I do have a question though... and maybe painting a picture of what we're trying to do might help.

A friend of mine and myself are in the process of making multi-level dungeons. We're wanting to include command blocks to warp people to different locations within these dungeons or maybe even warp them out of the dungeon. Is there a way that individual arenas can be set to:

    1. Not give any reward(s) if you got killed? Upon death you would be either warped to a prison cell or just respawned at your bed or wherever you started the arena from? Maybe have some XP levels siphoned?
    2. Allow a player to use a command block (button, pressure plate) to "properly leave the arena" thereby issuing the player a specified reward or just give them whatever rewards were set for the waves in the config. Optimally I'd prefer to do a specific reward, i.e. player receives a Nether Star for completing XYZ dungeon. (I believe this can just be done with command blocks actually?)
I guess I have to test whether I can restrict the /ma join or leave command using permissions, but allow a user to press a command block to issue those specific commands? Maybe you can answer this already?

EDIT: I did a little bit of testing and found that Bukkit/MobArena throws up errors when attempting to run "/ma join." So, joining an arena via a command block is a no-go. Leaving an arena via a command block is probably equally a no-go then...?

    sniperdoc:

I'm not part of the dev team, but I help run a pretty large server that heavily uses MobArena and I can certainly tell you that joining with a command block will not work! Command blocks run commands on the console, not through the player, so it receives no player to join. I recommend using a plugin like ServerSigns if you want to right click to enter and exit - or you could request a custom plugin if you really want to use buttons and pressure plates.

If you use something like ServerSigns for leaving, I believe they should still get their rewards you set in your config once they leave (although I've only personally tested with dying in and completing arenas). Unfortunately, I can't think of a way to add a reward with a right click (as opposed to on a wave, which MobArena's config already does) without taking apart MobArena and building your own plugin that uses MobArena's classes! Think about it this way: the rewards are being added to the stored player inventories, not the current player inventories, so you'd have to find a way to add it to that inventory that's stored within MobArena.

Honestly, MobArena probably isn't what you're looking for for dungeons - it's more like an event that could pop up from going down a hole in a dungeon level where you have to survive as long as you can to gain gear. There's no physical end location of a MobArena, only time and waves.

That being said, there's a rather interesting thing you could do: allow them to walk out. If your arena's protected area doesn't extend to the end of a passageway (or into some sort of a portal), they will be ejected from the arena as soon as they step out, going back to their old inventories and locations. You can always cover areas that stick out by using something like WorldGuard.

sniperdoc Just going to echo/correct a few of Hedgehog's points.
    • There's (currently) no command in MobArena that allows you to force a player to join an arena, so command blocks will not work. ServerSigns is a frequent topic in the IRC and seems to be the way to go if you want to eliminate all commands.
    • Rewards are accumulated in lists in memory, which are then added to the player inventories upon players leaving arenas. What you could do is leave out the 'every'-branch (MobArena might complain if it can't find any rewards, so just set something like '10000': stone, which will never happen anyway), and just populate the 'after'-branch with wave numbers AFTER what you want to be the final wave. Assume a final boss spawns at wave 30; you would then set final-wave to e.g. 35, and then make waves 31-35 supply waves or something easy. You could then set rewards like this: 31 = diamond boots, 32 = diamond helmet, 33 = diamond leggings, 34 = diamond chestplate, and 35 = diamond sword. This way, players who beat the final boss at level 30 will get a full diamond armor and weapon set by finishing up the easy waves at the end, and players who died before the boss will get nothing.
    • MobArena is not currently "dungeon-friendly", because it is designed to be what the name suggests it is (that said, many server owners over the years have shown me interesting and creative ways to make dungeon-like setups, so maybe you could come up with something). However, in the mythical MobArena 1.0, there will be 'linked' arenas, 'morphing' arenas and 'blocking' arenas, along with a lot more radical customizability concerning mobs and game modes. I'll be a real tease and not explain what these arena types/features will actually do, but let your imagination go wild ;) Some say, however, that MobArena 1.0 is a lie. Only time will tell if they're right!

The mobs spawn on the north-west corner of the block specified. So you really need to have a 4 square block area (2x2) free for them to spawn. Make sure the north-west corner is in the center of the 2x2 area.

If you look back in this thread (not far back) you'll find a discussion between me and garbagemule about the spawn points. Basically, each spawn point covers a 9x9x9 volume (11x11 in two dimensions). But the algorithm doesn't handle multiple levels very well.

Just a report after a ton of testing (read: avoiding work and instead playing on my server):

Arenas are way easier solo than with a bunch of people. Your scaling formula might go a bit too far. :)

Also, just a heads up, I stopped using obsidian bomb a looong time ago because it replaces non-solid blocks and sometimes doesn't stop targeting a player on player death. Yikes! Also, bosses sometimes warp into/through walls, which instantly kills them.

One more thing: endermen still teleport, and can teleport to the spectating area of an arena if the spectating area is above everything else. I've been trying to fix this, and even turning enderman teleporting off using AntiCreeper doesn't seem to work. I'm thinking of writing my own simple plugin that just cancels all enderman teleport events, but if AntiCreeper doesn't work, I doubt that would either. Do endermen have their own behavior code in MobArena or something?

I won't change the format of the spawnpoints, but I can change the way they're parsed, so that a half value is added to the x and z values. That should make the mobs spawn at the center of the blocks. 1.0 should allow for more sophisticated spawn algorithms to be pluggable, so maybe in the future you'll be able to do what you want :)

    Hedgehogs4Me
If you don't specifically set a wave growth node in your waves, it defaults to "OLD", which is "number of players + 1". The other possible values plug into a non-linear formula, which you might be able to use in combination with the amount-multiplier to make it harder for solo players. Alternatively, you can set min-players and max-players to make it easier to balance the difficulties.

As for Obsidian Bomb, it's been reported before, but I can't seem to reproduce it. I might give it another peek after exams (ultimo June), though. It appears that monster teleportation events are only modified, if the teleportation "from" or (logical OR) "to" locations are within the arena region. In other words, if the teleport starts inside the arena, the event is blocked. If it doesn't start in the arena, it is only blocked if it ends in the arena. At least that's what the code is supposed to do. What other plugins may be doing to the events is uncertain. You could try running a troubleshooting session with MobArena as the only plugin and a tonne of Enderman-waves, just to see if you can reproduce it in a fresh setting.

    Hedgehogs4Me

I can't set min players reliably because of the autostarttimer (but don't change that, or if you do, make it configurable! I want to let people do it solo if no one else is on the server), and the rest doesn't really make that much of a difference. It's mostly the boss health, actually - they take a few shots when solo, but when you have a ton of players it's nearly impossible. Abilities like living bomb can make up for that, but I don't want to do that with all the bosses, though - that'd get repetitive.
Maybe in version 1.0 you can make the formulae configurable? ;)

EDIT: get712, it might give that error while checkdata seeing it as fine if you have an arena without waves. Check your config. Just a guess, though, Garbagemule may have another idea.

ged712 Try restarting your server. Sometimes the setup bugs out, but restarts usually fix it.

Hedgehogs4Me I plan on it (configurable formulas). Until then, you could set it to a flat integer value that's moderately difficult for 5 players. That would make it much harder for a solo player.

    Probably some 1.5.1 R2 issue then... :(
garbagemule: Any possibility it might be LWC causing the issue? I have the default build container setting on it set to make containers private. I ended up removing all the /cprivate's off of the chests, but left them on the dispensers because I thought it'd be nice so that people couldn't disable the "traps" by removing all the slow/harm/poison potions...

I'll test it tonight to see if removing the private setting on the dispensers changes anything on a reload.

garbagemule: I think it was LWC causing the problem. Since containers get privatized on placement, you have to go in and remove the "lock."

I ended up replacing all the containers, did /cremove, then put all the stuff in the dispensers, loaded up the arena and the used 3 of the 7 dispensers and when I got killed and did /ma leave and saw no error in the server window. So.... methink's might be ok...?

Hi I promised I would show a video, sry for it being late but here it finaly is:
(Btw this plugin is fantastic I'm looking forward for the 1.0 release especialy with what you said just above)

In this video you will see what I think are bugs:
As you can see at the start of the arena we have the scoreboard but whenever we get hit once it disappears, this happens to all the players. I'm using serveral plugins: Worldedit, chestshop, MultiVerse, Mobhealth, MCjobs, Safecreepers, Lockette, MCMMO, Iconomy with vault and Myhome and Mywarp but I couldn't think of one that would overwrite the scoreboard and I never made one myself.

The second bug is that a lot of mobs tend to drop stuff; At the start of the arena we kill a lot of pigmens and you see the cameramen (I'm saveryan) picking up a gold sword. This sword will then act like a stuff from the class: it won't break and this way my unarmed class gets a sword and my classes with wooden sword also get's a gold sword from the pigmens. The same happens with bows from skelly's I dropped a almost broken one but the first shot I fired repaired it completely.

The third bug is a little bit later in the video: the angry dog's don't attack you immediately (wich isn't that bad) but they also don't damage us wich makes the wave a little easy :p. And the Iron gollems we make (with iron blocks and pumpkins) don't deal any damage to the enemies. This only started a while ago. Before it worked even with monsters in fight set to false wich is what I need so that creepers don't blow away entire waves.

The last bug is that when blazes shoot on ice it becomes water (sometimes still and sometimes flowing). This is kind of anoying. I need to repair my arena all the time and I kind of like the effect of ice it's better than glass so it would be cool if that was fixed.

Enjoy the video and if you want a better one to put in this forum I would be pleased to make one for you.

    Thanks a lot in advance
    Saveryan (The cameraman is TheDudeBoy)
