I may not understand correctly, but spigot, spigot API, bukkit, and craftbukkit are released on spigotmc.org.

What's with the mourning over bukkit dying?

Bukkit is dead. Spigot updating their software doesn't mean:

1) Bukkit itself is still alive. The project ended, the team left. See EvilSeph's post explaining why the project died

2) Bukkit has a future in Spigot. Bukkit's API is a dead end due to all the changes Mojang has been making.

There shouldn't be mourning. There should be acceptance and moving on to future projects

 

1. I am well aware, however spigot can make things better, so if instead of mourning, (yes, people are) they should go help spigot.

2. Um, spigot updated bukkit AND craftbukkit, they can continue the API with spigot.

Yes, but there is mourning, take a look at this forums.

 

Legal issues that I want nothing to do with aside, anybody could fork the project and update it. That doesn't make it Bukkit or CraftBukkit. The Bukkit API is a dead end, move on.
