Considering purchasing a dedicated server with the following specs...
CPU: Intel i7 x4 at 2.66+ GHz (8 core with hyper threading)
    RAM: 24GB
    Hard Disk: 2 TB HDD

Can anyone give me an estimate of how many players this could hold?

  2. 2.66 isnt that fast by todays standards so around 100-150 is my guess and Kimsufi isnt that great btw

Who is your host? I'm looking for a good, reliable host that holds upwards of 100-150 players that doesn't cost me more than $80 or so... Not sure if this is possible...

    Would this hold 40-50 players?
    CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1230 3.20GHz (1 core)
    RAM: 4GB
    Hard Disk: 100GB HDD
    $40/month

vps? because a 1 core xeon is unusual lol, and maybe 20 because it's only 1 core.

I meant I get one core of the xeon processor. Bukkit only utilizes one core anyways so it shouldn't make much of a difference (if any).

I still don't think you will get alot of players on that

funkystudios Do you get the entire core? If so, yes. Can you link to the plan?

Yeah I get the entire core.
About the host... They are a Greek company with servers hosted in the US and advertise on eBay. <Edit by Moderator: Redacted bit url>

Check out their website at http://dedicated-server.gr/, but better prices on eBay... They have good service and are reliable.

I currently have a 2gb i7 from them that I run hunger games on. Holds 40 people (the world is small and the server restarts after each game)

GHz isn't a very good way to measure how fast a processor actually is. i7s are fast. I have a feeling the reason the server lags is the HDD not being able to keep up.

    Disk Space (RAID 10): 350GB
    Bandwidth: Unmetered - 100MBPS
    RAM: 16GB
CPU: AMD Opteron, 4 core - 2.1 ghz eac
    Price: $28.50/month

Found this not to long ago... but the AMD Opteron is kind of a drag... With this server I could fit a decent sized world onto the ram with ramdisk.

A 4GHz server will make a pretty big difference compared to a 2GHz server. An SSD would be nice, but I'm on a budget.

  14. That i7 is very old, its a i7 930 from Q1 2010 so compared to the latest i7's even with the same clock speed it would be much slower due to advancements in the architecture

Nope. GHz sucks for comparing between different processor families. It's only really useful for comparing within the family. Without saying what type of processor the 4GHz processor would be, you can't say for sure that it would be better.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clock_rate#Comparing

Still has a faster architecture than many other processors out there that some hosts use. My point is, you can't decide if his processor is his best option or not based off of just GHz and not knowing his other options. Clearly, if he has the option to get another i7 that has a higher clock rate, or is newer, it would be beneficial.

Know of any good hosts, the best I can get for $50-$90? Hopefully not specifically for minecraft... I would like to run a small apache web server too. Who is your host for c.beastsmc.com? - just to get an estimate of costs.

At this point, their network is good enough for me to recommend them, and they fit into your budget.

It seems the ram is a little excessive to go along with the i3 CPU (yesuphost.com). But I don't know much about the CPU and its impact on hosting a minecraft server.

The i3-2100 is quite a sturdy little CPU, it's been running three MC servers and various other services for me without any issues... I have 16GB with mine, everything is going fine.

Wow, impressive! How many players could that server handle?

    Thanks for your help, btw.

While I have no real-world testing on this specific CPU to back me up, I'd estimate 150 players for the 16GB one, for the 8GB one, at least 75 players. RAM and CPU usage varies wildly for everyone, I might see 1% empty and you might see 10% empty, plugins can cut into resources like butter.

I hadn't taken a look at ovh.ie until now... Glad I looked at it too! Their Superplan SSD is amazing and I'm just about ready to purchase it... http://www.ovh.ie/dedicated_servers/superplan_ssd.xml.

I see no reason not to get this server.. 16GB ram, 2x120 GB SSD (RAID), and finally, i5 2400 4x3.1GHz.. $2 less =)

  25. The prices shown do NOT include VAT btw

    funkystudios

Yeah, I noticed that. But when I went to purchase, just to ensure the cost wasn't too high and no other prices were being added on, it said the VAT is 0%.

I keep finding better deals! This time hetzner.de. I won a bid from them with the following specs:
    CPU: Intel i7 980x
    RAM: 24GB
Hard Drive: 128GB SSD (RAID 1)
    Internet: 100Mb (unlimited bandwidth)
    $96/month

And how many players with this server? 250? I'm amazed at the prices with Hetzner and OVH.

Because they're not all that great (bad support too, from what I hear). Also, they don't accept PayPal (just a warning).

Not all that great? In what way are they bad? The price compared to specs is great. Dedicated server, 24GB ram with a processor rated 18th at Passmark. Not to mention an SSD on RAID 1.

Bad support? Lower cost ;). I will keep that in mind though. Credit card will work fine, but PayPal is handy since donations are hooked up with it.
