Damaged blocks acting as different blocks?

    As you may or may not be aware, with 1.7, slimeballs will have a use with pistons.

    This is unfortunate for my server, as slimeballs were going to be used as a special item, seeing as they had no use at all otherwise.

    Here's my question: Would it be possible to:

    Have certain blocks/ items have damage values that would not happen normally?
    Make these damaged blocks/ items not be able to be used normally?
    Make these damaged blocks/ items not stack with non-damaged versions of the same item?*
    Make these damaged blocks/ items be able to be used for certain purposes in a plugin, and only for that purpose?
    Have an optional client-side mod to give these damaged blocks/ items a different texture?**
    Have this all work without client-side mods? (Except for **)

    *- Could be avoided by just using normally non-stackable items, like food.



    The point of all of this is to basically add new items to the game without client-side mods. Would this be possible, and if so, how would you use it?

    I plan on using the new items to repair Chain Mail armor, which will be a special, rare item in my server.
