I have had a server running for a while on windows but i have found latley that its not the best OS performance wise, although it does run well i want to switch to a linux system but i cant decide which distribution to choose.

i was thinking Ubuntu or CentOS but i would like to know if there are any others i should have a look at?

CentOS is more for server usage whilst Ubuntu is more for desktop usage.

Ubuntu server works great. There is really minimal resource difference between OS. Especially when you compare it to minecraft itself running.

I say Debian or Ubuntu. They both work GREAT and they're easier to use than CentOS, imo.

I really like ubuntu, but i will probably mess around with cent os just to try it out. Btw does anyone that plays MC on ubuntu find that it crashes somtimes when you put it into full screen?

Go for Ubuntu desktop. Especially if you're new to linux. Or at least another desktop Distro.

    I heard Linux is secure.

Of course it is, so is nearlly every other OS.

But I heard Windows isn't secure. That sucks for me.

Debian squeeze, ram usage almost as low as centos with all the benefits of ubuntu guides working with it. Of course you need to learn how to secure a Linux server before bothering. Read up on iptables, fail2ban, security through obscurity, chrootkit, rkhunter, Linux permissions, apache security, and of course security on any new protocols you use. I recommend using keypass to generate separate passwords for everything. Make sure each Mysql database has it's own user and password with permission to only that table.

Careful messing with ssh ports if you don't have physical access to the machine.

  12. I wouldnt say CentOS/Fedora/RHEL as a server are harder to use that debian based ones. Its just what you have learned to use. I started using Redhat (pre-fedora) before starting school (and without knowing any english :D), and find everything easy to use. When I have to use ubuntu, the different packaging and etc... Ubuntu might be better as Desktop (some people say that), but I'd use CentOS as a server. I use it on all my Vms. I think RHEL and CentOS are much more used as a server.

CentOS takes up less resources, with a server (especially dedicated) this is vital and far more important then ease of use on your end. It takes some extra learning but its worth it.

Use Ubuntu, but keep it in classic and don't using Unity.

    the best OS is Linux.

Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, etc.. etc.. are all linux distributions.

    Stop making confusion, linux newbies.

for this i say LFS (Linux From Scratch) compiled for your machine in an Arch Linux environment

realistically Ubuntu should work fine and its an easy setup

Was Stage 1 the hard one or was Stage 3 the hard one? I did successfully do them all at one point about 7 years ago and by the time I was done I had a binder full of instructions lol. I imagine it may be easier now than it was then.

Stage 1 was the hard one. On my VPS I tried the base install of ubuntu server and gentoo. Ubuntu used less ram by a good 150 MB.

There's a distinct lack of Unix in this thread. :(

Pcsh, do a linux from scratch install utilizing compiler flags to build to your specific architecture of cpu to get the most performance

though tbh, if you have a semi-powerful computer, the differences between the flavors of linux don't really matter that much

Debian. With the right tweaks it can use about 2 MB ram :)
