How may users connect without requiring my IP?

I don't want people to join my server via my ISP IP. How may I change this? I've seen servers set up to connect via it's native website. I've never made a website before, but if this (For whatever reason) is recommended, then I'll do some research in order to make one. Otherwise, how may I do this?
(P.S. Sorry if a poll was required, this is the first time I've ever submitted a thread)

Basically, is there any other method of connecting to a server, and how?

Do some research and use dyndns or any other dynamic dns free site. basically you run a program on your computer that allows you to make a dns point to your ip. In other words if you wanted it to be madsupra.is-a-geek.com you could hand that out to your players instead of your IP and its free and you dont have to actually have a website, just that program and pick a dns. I recommend dyndns, but there are plenty others out there.

Yes, if I ever wanted to make a big server, I can't just give out my ISP IP.

Like the website :) Thanks for the info, I'll try it once Bukkit gets updated.

I use DynDns for example.. but theres more sites you can have.. but i recommend this one! You simply search: Dyndns on google and then sing up there and then when you make a IP, make a hostname (your hostname will be the IP) and then activate the host and after that you download Dyndns Updater and open that program. Go into the updater and sign in to your profile there (dyndns profile) and then press your hostname and then click update (something) =) now it will update it everyday so you dont need to change your ip no more and you will have only one IP.. the host ip =)

So, it's at the bottom of the web page, where it says 'Free Domain Name'? Or is it somewhere else?

OK, I've set up the account. Do I click 'activate your free DynDNS hostname.'?

Just for the record: if you host your server at home, they are connecting to your house, and your ISP.

Even if you setup a DynDNS/CNAME, it's basically just a hostname shortcut to your IP. It's barely masked, if at all. So you still want to take the same precautions to protect yourself (router with appropriate forwarded ports, up to date OS stuffs, etc).

The other option is to pay someone to host your server on their line.

Do you own any webspace? Most providers allow you to setup a web forward using a sub domain of your website. So for instance, my website is http://midgardrealm.net and I have created a web forward called mc.midgardrealm.net which is mapped to the IP of my server. People type in 'mc.midgardrealm.net' as the IP address in minecraft and it redirects them to the correct IP address.

Bear in mind that any reasonably savvy user will be able to do a lookup on the DNS and find the IP. If this is running on your home computer, you can't really hide that information.

 "Appropriate forwarded ports"? I'm always up-to-date with Windows. I no need to worry about that. But what do you mean by ^^

Well your servers port (probably 25565), and anything else you need (for example something to remote connect to your computer, I use ssh so I leave a port open for that). The main point is not to just DMZ the computer, because then you're basically leaving every window and door in your house open while you're on vacation.

All right, one thing I need to clarify: I'm a server noob. I don't mean to sound stupid, but I don't know what DMZ is.
I guess you could say the topic we're on is server security :p

DMZ = Demilitarized zone. Basically exposes some of your services to the outside world (the Internet). So your minecraft server would run in the DMZ, but you don't want other stuff visible to the outside world, otherwise you leave yourself open to being hacked.

So how can I prevent this?

Sorry - I thought that was your purpose behind using a dyndns, to protect your public IP. I just wanted to make sure you're aware that it's a shortcut, not a safety mechanism. There is no security difference between mc.mymcserver.net and 172.98.32.122, it's purely so people have something more memorable to type in.

By the way, I can't tell from this thread if you are using a router or not, but you should be. (that's what we're discussing about dmz's and port forwarding, configuring your router)

Dude, no offense, but do some googling. We aren't here to educate you on how to setup your computer....

Plus it's different for every router.

    Yes, I'm using a router :p

OK, I have done some research. Is there one or more ways to setup a DMZ?

    NETGEAR.

a DMZ for your average home router means: All traffic sent to your IP that the router doesn't recognize as requested from one of your computers is automatically forwarded to the DMZ'ed computer. So basically this is tossing it out and letting anyone on the internet attack your machine.

What you want is port forwarding, where you pick and choose ports that the router will know to send to your server, mainly 25565 (minecraft's incoming port).

Find your router's model and search, that's the easiest way to learn:

Wait, so a DMZ is port forwarding?

DMZ: Allows everything in and out of your computer * NOT recommended unless you have server standalone + firewall *

Is it recommended if I have a firewall and server?
