I have updated to dev build 2270 recently, and that seems to have significantly reduced the lag, it's still there but not near as bad.
try "password" before anything else.
Watch out for the nether glitch, sometimes it will load a regular world, and give it a red sky!

@ Brainiacguy, did you make sure that all instances of java were closed at the time? Open command prompt and type: taskkill /f /pid java.exe...
the password is usually on a sticker attached to the router somewhere, unless you don't have the default password.
Right now the only 2 issues I have encountered is that the nether is being really weird (normal world with red sky), and a generous amount of lag...
You could completely corrupt your map :D
Just tested Vanish NoPacket, it is working for me, though I have read elsewhere that it was broken.
