BUT: I only want it to happen to the players that were on the map and I don't want it to wipe their inventory if they simply logged out due to connection issues or some other reason other than deliberately leaving or having the game end.

NP, sounds interesting. Don't know if it's possible due to connection issues but I'll give it a try. Else use plugins like different inventory per world.

That was my plan but there doesn't seem to be a way to do that with Multi Inv
This plugin is able to distinguish between crashes and a disconect:
