Official Mod API, What it means for Bukkit and what it means for Server Admins.

As the Minecraft beta closes and cleaner code emerges, Bukkit and the developers that use Bukkit can only get better and better. This will also mean longer stability without the need for constant Bukkit changes and waiting for BukkitDevs to update their plugins only to find that Notch has released another update.

This also means that the Mod API, mentioned by Notch nearly a half a year ago, should be getting closer and closer to release. Once Bukkit gets a hold of this API I suspect that the genie will be let out of the bottle.

My main concern about the Mod API, which has gone understandably unnoticed by my repeated attempts to ask Mojang, is if the API will finally allow for Client Type modding to be handled Serverside? Will it allow the type of modding that Clients get without the need for a third party plugins like Spout and without the need for every client + the server to have it installed, i.e. run everything Serverside?

I hope this is the case.

I Administer the server for Bethesda Game Studios Forums and we desperately want mods like Buildcraft, Industrialcraft and Equivalent Exchange but those types of mods are simply out of reach at the moment.

What does Bukkit have to say about the API and the potential of it?

The "API" will most likely just be access to the source code as has been said before by Notch & co. It won't be any different than it is now inn he way of what is required for a clientside mod.

The api WILL be only the source code, and bukkit already has it,but its not compatible!
So,useless for both of em! :(

You, and countless others have been mislead. There is no modding API.

Minecraft will just have the source publicly available. This will make updates smoother, but beyond that, only help marginally.

This is why the Spout project is so important. Spout is an attempt at bridging Client and Server modding, and seamless integration of the two.

I know that Spout is important but its just so tedious. Especially when users don't know how/don't want to mod their clients. Which is the only reason I haven't installed it yet. Once Spout can automagically install new content, like is suggested in the description, I will have died and gone to heaven.

About the autoinstalls. Does it detect the mods that are on the server and then download/install those to the client if the client does not have them? Sounds a bit too easy.

Users don't need to know how to mod their clients, that's the bueaty of the system. They can just download the exe (or app or jar) for their system, double click, and play. Just like regular minecraft.
    It's that easy.

    Wat.

I was always told that Spout needed everyone to mod their clients to whatever was on the server in order for it to work.

    Thanks for telling me!

They just need to download the exe and run it.

    Spout is the server plugin
    SputCraft is the client.

That had me confused for a few hours when I first heard of it.

As far as I understand, right now the SpoutCraft API hasn't been fully developed yet, meaning SpuotCraft mods are limited.

Lol, I think you should make a PSA on how easy spout is to install, not that i didn't know but i think rumors like the one in this thread are limiting the usage of spout because people don't know what it is/ how it works.

BTW i LOVE spout, you sir are a god or Gandalf. Can i request a bit more documentation on spout gui's there has been a few things i hav wanted to do but i am not sure if spout would be capable of it.

I agree. After this thread and reading up on Spout I have been trying to educate those on Bethesdas Forum server about Spout and the advantages of it. I still have a few members who don't want to install any mods, including Spout. I have warned them that by opting out of Spout that they will be missing out on a lot of cool plugins/mods and that eventually Spout might be required to access the server at all.

A PSA is a great idea.
