I'm having a GIGANTIC problem. I've tried everything to get this server AND the one from minecraft.net to allow my players to connect and they still can't. They either get a "Failed to connect" error or are timed-out. I checked with another online player and BOTH servers work and allowed him to connect.

    Can you please help?

Is there a firewall on your computer? If there is, disable it. Did you port forward? If not, Google "port forwarding minecraft" with the model of your router or modem for instructions. Test by going to http://canyouseeme.org/ . Make sure that server-ip in server.properties is left blank.

I have both a hardware and software firewall and they are properly configured to allow traffic to and from Minecraft and the server. I tested this set-up out by asking a member of the Minecraft Forums to log into he. He was successful and had no problems in SMP.

I'm beginning to suspect my nephew's family of sabotaging the connection through their router because they want to limit his time on Minecraft. We didn't have a problem connecting up until two week-ends ago when he said his parents wanted him to install Norton Safety Minder (A.K.A. Nanny Guard). After that, he was having problems with the main windows of Minecraft no displaying the latest news and connecting to my server.

Maybe running the server under a different port or turning off name verification could help.

I'll try that tomorrow and let you know.

How do I change Minecraft default port?

Open the server.properties file with a text editor such as Notepad and change server-port to a different value.
To turn off name verification, set online-mode to false in server.properties.

you should check the norton program to see if there is some blockage occuring because of that. Maybe it's monitoring the ports needed for mc? just a quick thought

The problem ONLY seems to be on my nephew's laptop. The he goes onto the family's main PC, we're able to connect. His brother checked the router and firewalls and they allow traffic to and from Minecraft. I've checked mine and everything is set to allow minecraft to connect. Like I said before (not sure if it was on this forum), I had someone from the minecraft forums try and connect and he had no trouble.
