  1. Hola, does anyone know a good Java book. Everyone seems to like Java for Dummies here but it has bad'ish reviews (not as good of reviews as other books)

    Thanks :p

Why would you learn Java by books? I recommend watching thenewbostons java tutorials on YouTube.

  3. jensdeboom Everyone always says it's bad practice lol.

Thenewbostons tutorials or just videos in general?

TheGamesHawk2001 Purely educational, books are better than videos but you get bored way to often and it's not that much better. Videos are way more entertaining. Your decision :p. If you would go with a book, Java for Dumies is the book most people read, never read it myself though.

  6. jensdeboom Okay. How long do you think it would take me? Books v' Videos? I like videos. Just got told they're bad practice.. :)

I've learned it by watching "thebcbroz". They directly start with the bukkit API and don't give much info about Java so it is kinda bad practice altough my Java skills are pretty good and I'm making android apps atm... So I haven't learned it by thenewboston but if you wanna go with videos, go with thenewboston (he has 777000 subs atm, nuff said). How long it takes really depends. I guess I really understoof Java and started making my own plugins without having to watch tutorials after 2-3 weeks (with a lot of practice + He didn't explain Java, he explained purely things that had to do with Bukkit).

jensdeboom TheBcBroz teaches you just about every bad practice there is.

  12. This isn't a fact, that's your opinion. Video tutorials are bad for various reasons. I've listed some reasons before but I'm on mobile so don't have a link handy. And I agree with one of the posters above - TheBCBroz are undoubtedly one of (if not the) worst set of tutorials I have seen.

AdamQpzm Wowow calm down  I'm not recommending these tutorials at all. I'm just saying that I learned it that way. I'm sure thenewbostons Java tutorials are way better and are way more entertaining than the Javadocs.

  14. jensdeboom I am calm, sorry if my words appear aggressive or anything, I'm most definitely relaxed right now... and saying where you learned Java when somebody is asking about how they should learn is definitely taken as a recommendation :p

AdamQpzm oh no I was just saying that idk how long it will take him because I learned it in a different, less efficiƫnt (but way more entartaining xD) way so it depends.

lets be honest people dont want to learn java when they start off, i would suggest just getting involved with programming because you know whats worst than learning bad practices getting bored by it and quitting. I started from the bcbroz and i would say i have a solid understanding of Java now after over a year of coding.

Let's say you make minimum wage. That's *roughly* $7.50 an hour. If you're living on your own, you have bills to pay. So 100 divided by 7.50 is 13.33 repeating. Which means you'll spend about 13 hours working. That is a lot of time, and with bills, gonna cost a lot.

You can go to a local library/bookstore and go to the programming/technology section and find heaps of books on all different kinds of programming languages, including Java. Before purchasing a book, I suggest to check the reviews of it. As said above, you can also go online and watch videos from thenewboston, but I feel as reading a book on Java would make you learn better. Also said above, you can read the tutorials from Oracle. I'm sure you can also find online editions of books too. Also, I don't suggest buying a book on Java that is so expensive. I suggest you buy a book at a smaller price first just to make sure you do not waste any money. If you have any questions, feel free to Tahg me.

It's been done. I don't know if this is Java or not, but whatever.

Java for Dummies, Head First Java. You don't even have to buy them, just get them from the library as they are not textbooks, they're usually in the county library (if you live in the US, but I'm not sure about other places... Regional libraries?)

Minimum wage where I live was recently raised to $8.15/h. It's still not enough to live in anything more than a studio apartment, without TV and internet, working full time.
