Nobody really knows what is going to happen. Just read the staff's threads on their personal thoughts/story.

I would if I was sure I know everything and if I would be able to explain it correct.
Perhaps an older post will help you to get a rough overview:
    http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/what-is-going-on-with-bukkit-what-we-know-thus-far.306831/
In short: nearly all of the old "staff" has resigned. Craftbukkit seems to be halted,..
Many *haters* are around who did not care about the real reasons and throw their crude theories around also blaming everyone.
Nothing is as it was, moving in the forums is like a jumping through a minefield.
    Very sad times..

Edit: forgot those tahg thing again

In May I think, I can explain some of it, Mojang decided to say "we're going to enforce our eula now." In the EULA, it said you can't sell part's of the game like blocks, as it's unfair. So that's the start of it all. It all really blew over by late August until EvilSeph posted this
Read the full post here: http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/bukkit-its-time-to-say.305106/

    After that,

    Jeb tweeted the following: http://horrgs.org/img/7gID.png
Then Dinnerbone tweeted next the following: http://horrgs.org/img/zA1W.png

No one knew besides Grum, Dinnerbone, EvilSeph and other people at Mojang know that Bukkit was bought
by Mojang. Them buying Bukkit was apart of Grum, Dinnerbone, and EvilSeph requiring jobs at Mojang.

Two weeks later, Wolvereness filed a DMCA claim against CraftBukkit and Spigot, saying that he owns the code, as you can see here (the one on dl.bukkit.org is gone, so I had to use the Spigot mesage): http://horrgs.org/img/uQAS.png

Now, no downloads are available of CraftBukkit, Bukkit, or Spigot. And now, the CraftBukkit and Spigot repositories are DMCA'd. I don't know why Wolvereness did this, I think he had a good reason for it, I believe he was trying to end Bukkit and Spigot, as it was EvilSeph's wish for Bukkit to end.

The past Saturday, the entire Bukkit staff, moderators, admins, bukkit team members, and bukkit dev staff retired, as in hope of ending Bukkit for EvilSeph.

    Mojang released the EULA.

EvilSeph was concerned about lawsuits from Mojang and tried to close Bukkit.

Mojang aquired Bukkit 2 years ago. This was not common knowledge as they have never done much to help Bukkit, so when EvilSeph tried to shut Bukkit down Mojang swooped in and scolded him.

He, TnT, and LukeGB resigned as staff.

Mojang took over administration and said they would release Bukkit 1.8

Almost all other Bukkit staff simultaneously left after this.

Wolvereness puts a DMCA on the Bukkit code for legal reasons. (And disables all downloads for Bukkit)

Community falls apart, developers from Bukkit and Bukkit forks (spigot, ect.) and various community members get together to begin the creation of The Sponge Project.

And that's a very rough picture of where we're at. There's more to it, but that's essentially it.

LordDarthBob You can still download Bukkit, just not CraftBukkit.

The community as a whole isn't entirely sure what the future entails at the moment. It's been a wild past three weeks here on Bukkit and in the overall Minecraft/Modding community. After EvilSeph tried to end the project, it was revealed that Mojang has owned the project for about the past 2 years. After a weeks worth of discussion a few members of the Bukkit leadership staff resigned for their own reasons. About a week ago now, Wolvereness placed a DMCA on the Bukkit code for legal reasons, which disabled all downloads for Bukkit and in turn affected some of the forks of Bukkit. Currently most of the "classic" Bukkit staff have now resigned, again for their own reasons, and the Curse team has stepped in to maintain order and control of the forums.
