Hey, so I was wondering, should I reset my map in 1.8? Or should I just stay with the 1.7 world version? I need to know. Thanks!

Resetting map typically will result about 90% current players loss. So if you have player base which is changes slowly (low percent of new players joining and leaving server per day), you should definitely keep the map. If your player base changes quickly, then do the reset

So you're saying reset? My player base has been going down because the map has been raided etc. (I own a factions server) So should I? rsod

cartose777 you should reset your map if you definitely sure that you'll have new players in some time after you'll do it. If everything is so bad, then surely reset. But take care about your constant players - help them save some their nice buildings and items.
To prevent "too griefed" map in future, you should always clean up trash that people left on the land. You can use WorldEdit's //regen option or GriefPrevention's Nature restoration, for example.

It's a faction server though, it's supposed to be griefed. But that would make sense for Survival servers.

    Thanks, rsod

90% loss? Wat. I've reset my map several times (~9 month average map life) and most regular players stay. The ones that get pissed off and ragequit always return.

    I see.
    >>most regular players stay
    How much, 2 or 3?

Haha. Touché, but no, the recent decline in activity is due to other factors.

For a factions server, I'd give the players fair warning, open up a storage area (using a plugin ofc) and allow them to put all of their valuables in there. Once you are ready, reset everything except the spawn (use MCedit to move it back in maybe?) and then players have their stuff and get a new world.

ZanderMan9 you can use "Prune" feature in MCEdit to do it more easily...

rsod Huh, I'm no expert on MCEdit lol. But whatever works best for you. (Server owner)

Dont reset. people will leave your server forever, they spend their life and hours and hours mining and getting stuff. resetting the map will be a huge pain for them. I did it and a lot of my server Fans just left forever. don't reset! please.

Like others in this thread have brought up, straight resetting everything will push away some players. I think that the new map features in 1.8 could offer some amazing new opportunities though. I would definitely have some sort of inventory transfer for existing players to appease the loss of time/energy.

What I usually do is some preperation to get some nice borders ;)

As for the new blocks, I think I will create a small plugin that randomly replaces existing stone that has no Logblock records in my existing chunks, seems like a good solution.

Personally I have spawners that randomly teleport in a radius. My idea with 1.7 was (and with 1.8) to increase the minimum and maximum radius so NEW players spawn in new chunks and old players can keep their house.

    ( )

As for the player loss. I think this is true unless your new map is cooler then the old one. If you really want to reset start creating the map when the vanilla server comes out and make sure it looks like something you wish to make a screenshot of and hide the picture under your pillow.

Some stats: My longest map was from 1.0 -> 1.4 and not a single new player noticed it was an old map =)
