    Hi All,

I have a quick question. Are the Bukkit server versions typically a few versions behind the latest minecraft builds? Sorry if this ha been asked before.

CraftBukkit is only made for Release version of Minecraft but not for snapshots.
When Mojangs pushes a new update it can take a while for the Bukkit stuff to update CraftBukkit for this version, depending on how big the update is.

The 1.7 update took a few month, while other update took only a few weeks or days. However you should not expect a fast update when 1.8 comes out, as MC gets basicly a complete rewrite for the PluginAPI. (-> the 1.8. update will be farily large for Bukkit)

Also you may notice, that the current CraftBukkit version is for 1.7.2, while 1.7.5 is out. This is because 1.7.5 clients can connect to 1.7.2 servers while there were no mayor changes to the server code. They will eventually update to 1.7.5 in the future.

Thank you for your response. The reason I was asking was because i can only connect to my server using certain versions. I think I have to set my version to 1.4 or something like that. Do I have something configured wrong or is this by design?

A CraftBukkit.jar file can only host one version of minecraft. So if you want to play on 1.4 you have to find a 1.4 version of CraftBukkit (there was a collections of links somewhere... - or look at dl.bukkit.org).
However, these are not supported or updated anymore. Plugins that rely on newer API elements will not work properly, so you may have to find older plugins as well...

That's not what I am trying to do. I simply downloaded the latest version of CraftBukkit. I tried to connect and it gave me an error. So I changed the version of the minecraft client to match the version of Craftbukkit I downloaded. I was trying to make sense of why I had to do that.

The lastest version of CraftBukkit is compatible with Minecraft 1.7.2-1.7.5, try to update your Minecraft to one of these versions.

I believe that there is/was a bug, that showed a wrong MC version to the client between the 1.6 to 1.7 update.

I don't think this is technically correct. The current recommended build is still the 1.6.4-R2.0, and 1.7.2-1.7.5 can not connect to it. There is a beta out for 1.7, however, and most people use the betas since the recommended builds are always so far behind. I actually can't imagine people running a recommended build on a real server today as it is so behind... and the beta is very stable.
