I propose to the Bukkit plugin community a feature that I have seen implemented but never in the manner that I, as well as many others, desire. Simple put, the ability to save a selected cuboid or polygonal region and to have it respawn ever X amount of seconds.

Why would I want this feature for my Minecraft server? You might ask...

Build a dungeon full of pitfalls and other traps! But man, you would have to reset you're traps every time they have been triggered. Set the trap regions to respawn after 2 hours. Ready for the next unsuspecting dope. Perfect for dungeon and puzzle servers.

TnT Launchers! These can be a lot of fun, but often require a ton of setup. Setup can be accident prone. Having the TnT propellent in these launchers set to respawn every 30 seconds or so would create some interesting battlefields.

    Some TnT launcher examples:

Granted Pistons will make things easier... But I could still see the need to respawning blocks.

    Respawning mob spawners.

Respawn entire towns after an X amount of time. Let your server have fun with TnT, lava, lighters and create a crazy PvP battleground. After so long, the town is respawned fresh and new, ready to be destroyed once again.

Addons that can respawn regions (Proves it's possible)
    War
    nSpleef

Addons that should let you use a repawn timer on regions.
    WorldGuard
    EpicZones
    PreciousStones
+ Any other zone protection addon

I have personally requested a few authors about the feature over the last couple months. I've never been negatively dismissed, but I've yet to see it happen. My own server is PvP based. We have a giant town with several pvp warzones. Addons like War are great, but I really require control over region respawning. Currently as it stands I have to reload a world backup after every major battle. Disabling world destruction when I'm away.

So yeah... Its a lame idea I know.

I've always toyed with the idea of an indestructible dungeon challenge, but indestructable goes against the whole spirit of Minecraft, regenerating, however, would be perfect!

    awesome :)
When needing to control a huge server with lots of war it is hard to find a good plugin for that.
this would suit my needs, would be very RAM intensive though

@SoulSalmon That is what I hate about many servers. They often protect everything. I can understand why, hours of work can and will be craters on a impassable terrain in a matter of hours. But if you could just flag the region to be respawned. I can see many servers using it. It does go against the nature of Minecraft.

@MisanthropX I don't think it would be RAM intensive. I suspect it wouldn't be much of a issue at all. You would define a cuboid region, name it and save it. Would save to a file. A timer would start, and once it was up, it would reload the data from the file in the exact coordinates. Rinse and repeat. Also reload data on startup. I know WorldEdit lets you save schematics. Those save to a file. Whats stopping us from writing a plugin that reloads that data in certain coordinates on a timer?

While I was thinking of that. I had another neat idea. I realized it wouldn't be too much of a stretch. I'm picturing a DnD dungeon generator I once used. It had a bunch of room designs and would randomly pick them, rotate them, and piece together a large map. But the whole thing was a bunch of square regions. Using a reload feature that saves to a file, you could save multiple layouts for the same region. On respawn it would pick one at random, and possibly rotate it randomly. You could design a grid and do multiple regions spawning parts of a dungeon. Would need a check to make sure it would not reload if someone was in the region. But man that could really make some interesting labyrinths.
http://www.1km1kt.net/geomorph/ is a DnD map generator that kind of works like the one I once used. You can see the basic idea.

If someone doesn't pick up on this soon, I might have to write the addon myself. I have been coding in PHP, ASP, and the various C's for awhile. I just wanted to avoid getting in the addon development scene. Coding is my job, and at the end of the day, I like to avoid it. If you guys like the main idea, point this thread to some of the developers. Lets get some attention for it.
