Well they technically are the same thing. VPS stands for virtual private server. The shared hosting is just running all on the same computer. VPS is a virtual server running in another computer. So it acts like you have two seperate computers. VPS is also meaning your server is the only one running on that VPS. Shared hosting has lots if servers running on it. You can pick.

Have a look at my server host guide (link in my sig), unless you know how to run a server through SSH I'd go with shared.
You'll find lots of hosts to compare.

    Shared cPanel = Easier
VPS = More difficult but faster.

VPS is not always faster, in fact it has more overhead.

I had a friend who had shared hosting... I was helping him out with setting up some stuff... When we got to iConomy (for example), I'm pretty sure (I could be wrong on this) that iConomy prefers the full path of the flatfile or sqlite database file... So from logging in via FTP, we could NOT see the file structure and we didn't know what to put as the full path... Which meant that we had to ticket his hosting company and WAIT FOR THEIR REPLY... for information that a VPS user would have instant access to.

I'm not sure if iConomy would except simple dot to represent the current directory... never tested it.

As another example, 1.7 has changed the ./server.log to ./logs/latest.log

...Would a control panel be able to change it back to the old nomenclature ? I know with VPS, this is possible by editing the startup script to include
    Code:
    -Dlog4j.configurationFile=log4j2.xml -jar "craftbukkit.jar"
So much is possible with a VPS... with my friends Shared Hosting... it felt very limited... Like we had to submit a ticket for simple stuff and sit their and wait for a reply.

my VPS has web hosting, php, and mysql... which some plugins use.

But i don't know if it's actually BETTER... it's probably just personal preference and what options you want/need for your server.

VPS and dedicated both look the same. But the VPS is actually shared with many other customers. The dedicated server is yours and yours alone.

Aren't there shared hosting companies that provide shell access? That would allow you to do the type of things you're talking about.

Shared hosting would be easier to manage and it's get similar to a VPS, but in a VPS, you have more control.
