Hi there! Newbie to the forum but have been using bukkit for 2 years now. I currently have a powerful of that I run my server off here and there, but I don't like this. Instead, I have a low spec, old compaq machine that I could spare for constant use.
    Questions:

1: The compaq laptop has 256mb of ddr1 ram at a low speed. Is this enough for 5 players and 5 plugins? The machine runs a lightweight flavour of Linux, so about 189 mb will be for bukkit.

2: The processor is also slow, at 1.6ghz and single core, but is this okay? It will have some speed as its Ethernet based and not through wifi.

3: As an estimate, how laggy would this get? (FPS wise)

4: Is it capable of 1.7 when released?

    Thanks!

Let me tell you, there is going to be some serious block lag for other players. I don't even know if you will be able to handle it. It is just... Bad. Don't attempt it. :p

Pretty much not going to work well, mainly from the lack of memory that it has. Also running a minecraft server off a laptop is a bad idea since it uses a lot of cpu speed and will cause it to keep the fan spinning fast and lowering its lifetime

    Lifetime doesn't matter. It's a 8 year old machine I don't need.
And if a Raspberry Pi with LESS CPU power and 256mb ram can run a minecraft server, why can't the old laptop? On a raspberry pi, it runs a lightweight version of Linux and so does my laptop. Not to mention, the laptop has double the speed over a raspberry pi.

But even so, does that mean I can't run any bukkit plugins?

    :(
It's worth a try. Or else the machine will just stay in a storage box for all eternity.

I would say that computer is NOT suitable for running Bukkit (or much of anything else!).

onkzzz The lifetime matters as if you are not around when it dies, the server goes down, also a raspberry pi (with 512MB RAM) does not run a minecraft server well at all, it is laggy even with just a few people (like 2 or 3)

While your CPU might be faster, the sheer lack of memory is going to kill the performance

You can always try it and see if there is enough performance, doesn't hurt

256 MB RAM ... lets say 78 MB if you install ubuntu minimal.. leaving you with +- 180MB RAM.
Nop never ever ever gonna handle it.
Maybe spigot without plugins and 2 players... no more..
And then I mean like a simple /spawn plugin.. essentials wont work..

You could probably run and look at your Bukkit server, admiring it's
[WARNING] Can't keep up! Did the system time change or is the server overloaded?
    notification spam.
That's if you're into that sort of thing.
In reality, servers can run on 128MB RAM, 2 players max.
The laptop will probably have about -7 FPS if you try to do anything else with it.
    Your game will be fine.
    Just, dat block lag tho.

    True. Very true.
Just to confirm, the CPU is an Intel x86 Celeron @ 2.55ghz. The ram is showing up as 191mb, which makes matters worse.

And about a raspberry pi, you're wrong.
I was able to run a 8 player server and 4 basic of the basic plugins and still got 35fps and only slight block lag.
Plus, this server is usually only online on Saturdays and Sundays, 12 til 9.
And lifetime DOESN'T MATTER. I'm always going to be right by the laptop and its never left unattended. I am not going forth with this though, as my school is selling some old 2005 high spec e-macs for £25. They have a single core 2ghz, 2gb ram internal spec and run Mac OS X. Sure, old. But, GOLD. They are still beast to this day, and a few hacks away from running the latest Mac OS X.

  11. Your server specs have absolutely nothing to do with your client's framerate. An eMac will be unable to play minecraft 1.7 because of the opengl level supported by that old video card. It would certainly make a better server machine than the laptop because of the ram though. Install OSX 10.5 or a PPC linux distro and java and you're good to go.

I think it is possible but very limited the problem I'm aiming on is the cpu ive owned once a ovh server with a 1,60 ghz cpu and 32 gb ram though all mobs where clipping including players where constantly moving very strange eventually ive upgraded the cpu and it whas alot better.

ram is less important since I'm very sure chunks gets loaded via the cpu.
though ram gets used again for storing and saving so when you copy paste a huge thing in worldedit you will see your ram thight up, same probally counts with inventories aswell.

and for fps, fps has nothing to do with server specs.

Again, as they are trying to say, most of your frame rate lag is not going to come from the server, it will come from the client. Your block lag and mob lag will take affect. That is what you need to be watching for.
