I'm aware that this is an argument that has been had many times before but I'm sure there are lots of people with opinions about which is the superior plugin. I've used LWC since my server has had a survival world, but I've always wondered if Lockette was better. One thing I like about LWC is that there are no signs to get in the way, however being able to see that something is protected is useful for players. LWC is more difficult for players to use, but Lockette has less functionality. Lockette doesn't protect from exploits such as hopper transfer (that I'm aware of), but the extra protection that LWC has makes it use more resources. Which do you prefer and why?

I wouldn't try to compare them in terms of superiority. They are both excellent tools when you use them to solve the correct issue.

    Let me elaborate.

If you use LWC's MySQL feature you have the option to edit and manipulate large amounts of locks using MySQL commands. If your the type of server that can take advantage of this or that can maybe even find a creative way to use this to create new game mechanics than this is a very valuable feature. LWC is also has more command manipulation than lockette but weather or not that is a good thing can be a matter of opinion. The database does come at the expense of a performance hit but in most situations it probably isn't significant. Maybe someone has some stats?

On the other hand you have Lockette which does not have a database. The lack of a database makes this plugin excellent for servers who either don't need/want to have mysql or for those who don't like to delete every chest in an area before you use worldedit copy/paste. Why do you need to delete every lock before WE usage? The lock isn't placed on the container when you use LWC, it is placed on the block location. If you cut a chest out and someone places a block on that location that block is now locked by the original chest owner! With lockette you can cut/copy/paste locks with worldedit! Woop! Making all those signs does take it's toll on your play-time but it is also a great visual mechanic which allows one to see who owns and has access to any container at a glance. Also, lockette does have protection against the would-be hopper exploit.

These are just a few major differences that can be seen as pros or cons depending on what kind of tool you need for the job. Figure out what problem you need to solve then pick the best tool for the job.

Personally, I use lockette. I run what you would call a semi-vanilla server so I don't want to make it too taxing for newbies to bukkit servers to learn the ropes so I avoid plugins heavily based on commands. I also need to be able to make clean WE copy/pastes and I like the visual aid that is the sign. LWC might come in handy for certain types of servers though.

Onionbro Your point about WorldEdit is something I've never thought about. Ease of use for players is definitely important as you stated, and the visual aspect of having a sign "protecting" the block instead of some mysterious invisible force is definitely nice for players. The one problem that the signs cause is that (correct me if I'm wrong) if you want to stop using Lockette on your server, you can't just type one command and have all the signs be gone.

I currently use LWC and have a database of around 7000 protections. I routinely use /cadmin cleanup and /cadmin expire 2 months to get rid of old protections and while performance doesn't seem to be a big issue, LWC is at the top of my server's timings (taken today). I would love to see some timings from Lockette to see how it compares to LWC in terms of resource usage.

MegaNarwhal - Timings aren't bad there, actually. Zombies (Mojang and their pathfinding bug... ugh) take up double the time. I think LWC offers a lot of features that Lockette does not. That said, their scope and purpose are a bit different and so it makes sense.

I like both. LWC because it's just plain simple to use. Lockette because I love signs (Hence the reason for Sortal and Signs in Stats.)

PlotMe removes LWC protection when the plot is cleared.

You could always try an alternate locking plugin called LoreLocks. Nothing visual similar to LWC but it comes with a lock picking element which you don't have to use but if a player wants to lock their chest, they have to craft the lock themselves. The crafting recipes are customizable for lock picks and the locks.

There is also a trap mechanic that you can allow your players to craft and there is permissions for all of these features. If you want to see an immediate example of the UI for a basic lock, click the video link in my signature.

Finally, you can set the chance to break the lock pick on each try and make it run a command on success or fail as well. You could even damage the player if you want using that when they fail to lock pick or you can announce their name to the server that they failed.

I hope this helps you and anyone else looking for a chest locking plugin.

I personaly dont like databases and love the idea that the data for protection is in the map and not in a database somewhere. Also my HorseProtect plugin on my server does not use databases it just reads the lore on the saddle and that protects the horse.
