I like to play with my friend on minecraft, however, I need to run the server because his router is incompatible with port forwarding. So, I'm the one getting all the lag, But I also have a DellĀ© XPS T600, Pentium III Clocked at 600MHz, 640MB RAM, No HDD, OS: Puppy Linux 4.3.1. I think it has java 7, but it might have java 6. So, Can I run a server for 2 people on it?

    Haha... P3.

For two people, probably. I'm not sure if you'll be able to load many plugins. You should probably have a HDD or enough space for the world file on your flash drive (I'm assuming that's what you're running off of?). You maybe should pull the view-distance down too to load fewer chunks.

Test it out and let us know what happened.

I forgot to mention that I use an 8 gig flash drive instead of an HDD, I'll run the test when I find a long enough ethernet cord, Minecraft works just fine on it but i have to put it on lowest graphics.

Running the game is obviously different from hosting. Let's see how it runs! :D

Well, I just booted it up and it turns out i have a dead RAM chip and a dead RAM socket.

So instead of haveing 640 MB i only have 348 MB so puppy linux refused to load... -.-
Now I'm trying to figure out what the command was to skip loading into RAM...

Any ideas on how to get puppy to load with only 384 MB?

    Erm...
You might want to run memtest86 again because according to http://puppylinux.org/wikka/MinimumSystemRequirements you should still be fine... (I'm thinking your other ram blew as well.)
You might want to invest into a gui-less linux version because they need WAY less ram.
I personally have ran bukkit on a 256mb ram Ubuntu Server 12.04.
I've had some experiences with CentOS and know it, too, should be able to run in gui-less mode http://superuser.com/questions/365118/how-can-i-install-centos-6-without-the-gui and run bukkit.

No way in hell can you run minecraft with 348mb RAM, you're better of getting a host for like $4 for ONE month and playing there. See how it goes, and repeat.

If you search propperly there are some pretty cheap hosts out there, e.d OVerZold is much bang for your buck

"OVerZold", only the name already shows that they have quality xD

Well, actually they do have much quality, they only use their resources from about 70-100%, which is what normal hosters dont do, however network speeds are good and the machines run fine aswell.

Well how do you know? Or are you the owner of that company

    iSidle

Well, they told me that, their support is great, they even respond @ 2 AM in the morning, and I have a machine running over there. And OVerZold is just a project name, the real hoster is iperweb

When I get the chance, I will do it. I have a old PC with like 512MB of RAM. I will throw Debian on it and give it a shot.

    The short answer is no.

The longer answer is that it might be possible to cobble something together, but the playing experience will likely be sub-par, and there are better alternatives for not much money.

Well, You guys were WRONG... It ran... Me and my friend played and as soon as I said "/stop" in the console it started spewing random letters and numbers everywhere and now Java doesn't work anymore... So long story short, it's a BAD idea.

And actually, there was VERY little lag.

Oh, and NEVER drill a hole in your ceiling to get an ethernet cable upstairs... it's just a downright BAD idea.

I ran mine up the stairs. Just haven't bothered to get an electrician to fish it through the wall and install jacks.

Unfortunately, I am unable to retrieve the error log because my drive was corrupted when my friend hit the reset button (Why are those even on the front of the case? I mean, that's just an invitation for a toddler to ruin your day..)
thinking that since my computer crashed it needed to reboot... Now all I have on my drive is a file with no name (and i thought that linux didn't let you do that...) and when i opened it with notepad++ it was empty.

sounds like your error is much deeper than bukkit server breaking your java then.

Okay, I think I'm gonna put the machine back in the attic so I won't go insane trying to fix it's problems...

Heck if you're determined to run it on a machine like that, and having hardware issue on that one.
Just browse craigslist and pick up a similar spec'd machine for 20-30 bucks.:p

512MB is the recommended MINIMUM! I offer 512MB cheap, but seriously, find a nice host, don't use home computers.

Well i run a server with 128mb ram on a vps, so yes it's possible.

I think with ram it would work but maybe between 8-10 players, but your cpu would get problems people told me I had to get a 2.5 ghz cpu as mimium to fix my problems with things like players, entitys spassing and half walking in blocks:p

Me and my friend played on it fine until I typed "stop" in the console... Then (Because I use linux on the command line, not X) The screen was filled with errors, so My friend hit the power button with his logic being: "It crashed, so it needs to reboot."... So now puppy is corrupted and all that is left is a file that is somehow 98.6 MB that has no name and contains zilch...

Now how am I going to patch that hole...

Can anyone recommend a good host?

If you like low price and you have a good bit of technical know-how, I like minecrafted.net as a shared minecraft host $4/GB per month is pretty low and the quality of service is great. That said, customer support is awful there but other than a few billing issues in the beginning its been great. I've paid a total of $48 for four months of 4GB server ($12/month during their $3/GB promotion for the summer).

Otherwise, I like VPS's from RAMNode with a 35% coupon floating around online. Close to the lower priced BudgetVM price for Xen.

I've gotten a server to run just fine on 32MB of memory, so 348MB is more than enough for what Cheesington is looking to do. The real problems here are probably the CPU speed, the speed of the flash drive (assuming it's not USB 3.0 with the other specs of that computer), and the speed of the memory rather than the capacity.

If you know your way around Linux, I would recommend renting a VPS. I recently rented a 512MB instance from DigitalOcean and I have no complaints. It was up and running in less than 2 minutes, and with a little configuration I'm now running an MCPC+ server with 50 mods on it with no server lag and great connection for 5 bucks a month.

im interested at how you are going to run a server on 32MB considering a regular server requires atleast 128MB RAM to even launch.
