It would be better for pretty much everything. However the video card would only be able to play Minecraft. The AMD build I showed you earlier has a better video card at the expense of the CPU.

Sushi What about an i7? Is the i5 Ivy Bridge?

    Sushi

The i5 is Haswell, the newest architecture. Ivy Bridge is the last generation.

I think the Ivy bridge is still a damn good option.

The Haswell motherboard (Z87) is going to be an improvement over the Ivy Bridge motherboard (Z77). Otherwise, Haswell doesn't buff you that much except for power efficiency. Still don't get the fucking Xeon.

That build is also very good if you want to save some money, but I'm not sure why you're dead set on the Antec case. The NZXT Source 210 is better and it's the same price.

Switched cases, is this processor Haswell? http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80623i72700k

Nope that's a sandy bridge, two generations old :p You go by the first number in the processor. IE: 2500 is 2nd gen sandy bridge, 3770 is 3rd gen Ivy bridge, 4770 is 4th gen Haswell.

rguz10 Sushi Okay, I had to switch the motherboard to get i7 Haswell compatible. I have decided to install Windows on one drive and CentOS on the other. What drive should each of them be on? I have a 120gb SSD and a 1tb HDD. I will be hosting on CentOS. This is the updated build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1jbe0

The integrated video card chip on the i7 is better than the 5450. The 5450 is honestly a pile of shit, it isn't worth it since the integrated video card on the i7 is better. Your motherboard is really bad too. Picking out an i7 and pairing it with the worst compatible motherboard you can find isn't going to get you very far. I think you're skimping on the motherboard and the video card to get the i7. Let me tell you something... The i7-4770 isn't worth the extra money you pay over the i5-4670k. Get the i5, get the better motherboard, and get the better video card like the build I made for you. If you want the i7, cut the 7770 video card and just get the i7. Don't switch out the motherboard or anything. But you might not be able to play Minecraft smoothly on the computer.

Sushi WAT So you are telling me that graphics will be good without a video card?!

The i7 has a video card in it. I'm saying the 5450 you chose is so bad that it's worse than the video card in the i7. It isn't going to be able to play Minecraft smoothly at high resolution.

Get the AMD build I made for you or the i5 build I made for you. Stop trying to change it.

Sushi Okay, what drive should I put Linux and the server on?

  15. Offline

    Sushi

Choose one OS. While the server is running, you can't use the other OS. I don't see a big point in installing 2 OSes.

Sushi I have my reasons, I do. Which one for which drive?

    Split the SSD in half.

I don't see why he won't run a Desktop Linux distro as his main OS... For basic shit like he is doing any Linux distro will work. Plus it is better for the server things and such.

And with the Graphics... I was told that the Haswell did like 3x better than Ivy bridge in the GFX dept. I have a 3570k @ 4.2, which is a Ivy bridge. It could run SUES shaders at 30+ FPS. The Haswell has no need for a GFX card unless your playing real games :p

Okay, then he probably doesn't need a discrete graphics card, but I would still argue he doesn't need the i7.

I feel that the server/Linux needs to be on one drive and Win8 on the other. I'm planning on putting Windows on the SSD and Linux on the HDD. Should it be the other way around?

    Stuck between: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1jcE9 and http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1jdZ9

I'm not sure. Windows seems to make more sense. How much players would work at a time without lagging?

Extra storage. You aren't going to get very far with 120GB, are you?

Probably not. I'll use CentOS and have the server installed on the SSD with the HDD for my non-server/linux files.

Yeah. Same goes for Windows. Partition the SSD, and have both of them on it. For Linux if you want a GUI Ubuntu isn't a bad idea.
