First of all, I don't know if this is the right forum section, but didn't know where else to it...

I'm building a little server for me and 6-10 friends, and I want to know your thoughts on my hardware choice.
Then there will of course be a Internet connection: 30/90 Mb/s
    Total price: ~$520 ~€400 ~£340

A 180 W PSU? This thing will burst into flames when it runs for several hours/days... Replace it with a bequiet Dark Power Pro P10 550W/750W PSU and you should be fine.

Don't you think a 500W is a little overkill? I have a PC with 2 burners and a GT650 and only 350W... It runs perfect...

XDRosenheim no, im serious. A PSU has a maximum peak that it can handle for a short amount of time. Like you start a game .. your system needs high amounts of power shortly to start up your grafic card while keeping the power stable on each line (3,3 V, 5 V, 12V) If you save money on that part you will get into trouble sooner or later.

One example: You dimension your PSU too low it might work for some time having no problems but the PSU will hit its limits multiple times degrading life time of the PSU. Also your other hardware components will suffer from such "inconsistent" power supply damaging it also by a small amount.

The more this happens the more it will cost you replacing such components. Better get a good PSU from the start that has some reserves left making it life longer. The longer something runs the better quality you need.

Also check out what Peak Power a PSU has some will tell you "1000 W" and have a peak power of 650W.

lycano - Yea, okey, maybe I should put a bigger PSU in, but i won't go over 500W, I don't need any sort of graphics on it. It will most likely be running Debian...

I feel like that system is overkill or just 6-10 friends, go buy a 2GB server from somewhere and that will support a ton of plugins and some crazy awesome builds. If you want some cheap hosting with great support PM me. (I will give you my personal Skype.)
