    Hi guys,
My server has recently been getting major lag spikes but the tps is fine.
    Specs:
    4 Gb memory
    Cpu: e7300 core 2 duo
    Running ubuntu 12.04
Bukkit version: CraftBukkit Beta Build (1.5.2-R0.1)
    Plugins: WorldEdit and WorldGuard
    All help will be appreciated

There practically can't be server side lag spikes if some secobds later the tps is still at 20, so is it maybe a client side lag spike (primarily graphics) or a network problem (wifi cards)?

  3. There can be lag spikes anytime in between - seconds-long lag spikes have been observed on servers running on "20 tps" otherwise.

If the tps display reflects the lag spikes or not, depends on how the tps display is implemented: if your tps display reflects only a couple of seconds, then it is unlikely that you see a lag spike there unless you keep running the command every couple of seconds, while a long term display for the last hour will hardly show much of a difference for few such spikes, especially if using rounding.

Edit: Since 1.5.2 i do have more lag spikes seemingly caused client-side, though. How do you check/observe those lag spikes? What does happen, what not (what you would have expected)?

No, i dont think it is client side because me and my friend both have 60+ fps while playing minecraft, but my network's upload speed is only 3-4Mbps

When the lag spikes happen, you cant type any commands, you can still move around but other players are frozen in place until the lag stops and happens again 5 seconds later.

  6. That seems to be a server-side lag spike (rather), because you can still move around. Looks like just nothing arrives from the server until spike is done.

Does the server log show anything for the moment? Could just be your friend used a WorldEdit command freezing the server shortly?

No, the server log shows nothing, And it isn't a world edit thing because it still happens when he isn't on the server

EDIT: The internet my server is running on is only 768kbit

Oh my god, no server can run on upload that slow. You'd probably need to get a dedicated host or better internet.

Just to be clear: downlink is 5Mbit, uplink is 768kbit.

  10. That might be the cause, best is a hosted server or a stronger connection (insufficient uplink can kill the server on chunk sending for instance).

With that upload, you can handle 2 or 3 players, maximum. Not even worth the trouble.
