Hello! First off, this is NOT a "When will bukkit upadte" thread, but I have an actual question. I have seen some servers that are bukkit based running 1.5, but on dl.bukkit.org, even after checking the dev builds part, there is NO 1.5 build, so I am wondering how other servers have it ._.

So the mcsg team can code bukkit faster then the bukkit team can ._.

HIVE has also updated there server and its plugins <snip>

Im not sure how they do it but i dont think they update it the same way the bukkit dev do.. They probly just update a few classes and lines of code just to make 1.5 clients connect to the server. Im not fully sure.

You'll find they just allow 1.5 clients.

I believe Double0negative runs MC-SG? Maybe he can shed some light.

They hack the protocol to allow 1.5 clients to connect to a 1.4.7 server. You will get no 1.5 features when you join these servers. It's fragmenting the bukkit community

  7. There are some server mods that just allow 1.5 clients to connect, while the server still is at 1.4.7. This is no option for CraftBukkit.

Other mods updated "hard", but such short updating time while maintaining the reliablity of the whole Bukkit API seems unlikely to me.

We will have to wait - as far as i have heard, they go through a lot of files line by line, since this is not a minor update. Hope this makes the result more reliable etc.

The two popular options at the moment are an unofficial protocol 1.5 compatibility patch on 1.4.7, and an unofficial (but real) 1.5 updated build. According to MC Stats there are nearly 3000 servers on 1.5 now.

However, both are unofficial changes to CraftBukkit neither endorsed nor affiliated with the official Bukkit project. They are not supported on this forum as the Bukkit team is working on their own official 1.5 update. Discussion of and linking to these unofficial solutions, even though they may be acceptable solutions for some, is disallowed by forum rules and this thread will likely be locked by a Bukkit moderator once they see it.

If you disagree with this situation and wish for it to improve, there is a community feedback thread here where you can voice your concerns: http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/suggestions-regarding-updating-and-transparency.134566/

My server is currently running 1.5 with all the 1.5 features, only 2 of my plugins (Runecraft and Shopkeepers) are currently non-operational. I use the unofficial 1.5 update build.

For the record I didn't see anything in the Forum rules about discussion of unofficial Bukkit offshoots being prohibited. I read them word for word. However I do see the trend of threads getting deleted or locked whenever someone links to the unofficial build.

If this is actually against the rules, it should be posted in the rules page.

Its called keeping my server alive, not fragmenting.

We are running on a modified 1.4.7 that allows 1.5 clients.

Sorry to say this, but I meant Minecraft Survival Games, not Minecraft Superior Gaming :p

Well, either way, we are running "1.5"

I'm of the same opinion. I seriously question the reliability of them as well. I would much rather wait.

I for one prefer reliability over convenience.

I ran over 2.1k ppl on them today. I would hardly call them unreliable. However, they will not work so well with survival, hence why my survival/factions servers are down.

It doesn't seem to be codified in the rules (or maybe I missed it too) but there was this post by EvilSeph:
Unofficial Builds are NOT Supported and NOT Recommended in 'Community News and Announcements' started by EvilSeph, Apr 4, 2011.

Maybe a staff member can clarify, but I take this post to mean "no longer allowing the distribution of unofficial builds" on the Bukkit forums, since their open source licensing (LGPL) in their code repository has no such redistribution prohibition.

agaricus: That helps. My only comment is that the biggest thing contributing to the fragmentation of the Bukkit community would be the historic slowness of the Bukkit update process. People get tired of waiting and do it themselves.

You cannot distribute any unofficial CB build. Also, no adf.ly links are allowed on these forums.

Thank god I got here before the admins remove the link and banned you. I don't get why they're so fascist about these things. I mean, their own dev builds have problems and they distribute them anyways because they think server admins should have the option to choose convenience over reliability. So why get all anal about the unofficial builds? I'm going to test this thingie asap.

First off, Pretty sure adf.ly links are banned.

Secondly, It's from an external source, their dev builds are made by them and they can reassure admins there is no backdoor code, or dodgy code, there may be bugs, but they do state, use dev builds at your own risk.

Finally, The admins wouldn't ban for something like this (I wouldn't think), the worst they would do is remove it and give the user an infringment (warning) to not do it again as it goes against the Rules

    Have a nice day.

I think the rules page should be updated with a few things. I'd have never known that adf.ly links are forbidden, as well as distributing unofficial builds, unless another forum user had informed me.

I think people need to realize that people are idiots. If someone googled Bukkit 1.5 and found a link posted by a nobody that is an unofficial 1.5 server, and they end up making 20 topics about how bukkit is broken and glitchy when its not the real thing, that could be annoying and unnecessary! Even if it isn't against the rules, if people don't know how to do it themself or find it out there on the internet, they probably shouldn't use it.

rules against unapproved plugin/bukkit downloads existed for ages.

Point out where they exist in the Terms and Rules page if you don't mind because after re-reading it three times for clarity, I still can't see it.

I understand that the rule has been around for a while, but it's only known to people who have been using the site for a while. I'm glad I managed to learn this from watching other people get threads locked/infractions for it.

If a rule is a rule, it should be listed on the rules page, otherwise you risk punishing new members for rules that they did not know about (through no fault of their own, I might add).

oh, sorry. that rule is on dev.bukkit.org terms, not forums.bukkit.org.

So that would be a BukkitDev rule for people posting plugins. Why is it enforced on the forums? They are two completely different sections of the website.

possibly outdated, is my guess. i get your point.

There should be a sub-forum available during times like this for people to share unofficial builds. I've been using the one posted in this thread for an hour or two now and it works flawlessly. Very few plugins are broken (namely Reforestation, Orebfuscator, DragonAntiPvPLeaver, and MobCatcher). I'm surprised with how smoothly everything else works. The thing is I don't know the source of this build. Maybe whoever made it has released an updated version since. Maybe someone else made a better version. I can't find out any of this because of the censorship in this forum.

So, I'm requesting a sub-forum be made to discuss these builds, with a sticky clearly stating that they are unofficial and may contain malicious code. I'm willing to take the risk of getting my computer blown up by a virus, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Why should we allow other groups to mislead our users and damage servers? If they want to do that, they should do that on their own forums. Locked.

The team is working diligently on an update and will be out as soon as possible! :)
