Hello, I am currently running a server from my old laptop but not yet public. I am buying a new computer for it. Should I run it on a Mac Mini with 8gb of ram or a custom gaming computer? Thanks!
Custom gaming computer hands down... I am sure it will be cheaper, run cooler and has better quality parts than a Mac Mini.
Ram has nothing to-do with it really. You need good internet connection. Post you're results from http://speedtest.net/
Use a linux machine. Always best, and most linux distros are free Recommended distros: CentOS MineOS (havent tried it) Ubuntu 10.04 server (nto so recommended, but better than both pc and mac) Also, i would strongly disrecommend mac, as they use their own version of java.
"Hello, I am currently running a server from my old laptop but not yet public*. I am buying a new computer for it*. Should I run it on a Mac Mini with 8gb of ram or a custom gaming computer***? Thanks!" * = He is running a server currently on his old computer, wich is not yet public **= He wants to buy a new one for making it public ***= He asks if he should get a Mac or a custom built gaming computer Or am i completely wrong? :s
Ok. How would I get that then because it is the fastest in our area Also Can someone help me here? http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/how-do-i-allow-more-ram-for-my-server.120881/ I just want 20-30 peps on it. EDIT by Moderator: merged posts, please use the edit button instead of double posting.
Not sure about how to get better connection, but you might, if your players stay around tha same areas, run 10-15.
Yeah, and? The question is still about hardware and not about software! First of all the screenshot shows a result in Mb and not in MB: Mb = MegaBit MB = MegaByte 1 MB = 8 Mb And even with 100 mbit/s you have enough for about 500 slots!
Thank you soooo much FRDMN. And everyone else. I will let you all know what the ip is when it is running It may be another month or so EDIT by Moderator: merged posts, please use the edit button instead of double posting.
Seems like we completely misunderstood each other. Anyways, yes, i meant megabit, not megabyte. Also, notice i said 100 mb/s for a 100% OPTIMAL server, wich by, i meant perfect. Now, look what you've done. OP thinks he can run a 500 man server now :I
When he thinks that, he didn't done his maths right: 6 (players per megabit) * 3.62 (his upload result in mbit) = 21.72 players
According to frdmn, yes. Also, frdmn, it really depends on a a lot of things like: Network card + drivers ISP filters/gateways wireless or wired connection.
Stop. Wrong. The amount of RAM allocated to a server contributes on the performance and "durability" of the server, notice the quotes. The amount of RAM allocated displays how fast user-to-server logging of interaction of other users or just simply block-to-user-to-server logging is, or even user-to-user-to-server logging. You are correct, however, about the connection speed, which is probably obvious that you will need a high-end Internet connection for almost any gaming servers.
