Ok I was wondering, is the default amount of people that can be on someone's MC server 20 by default, or is ''20'' the estimated amount of people that bukkit has detected your server can hold? Because at the moment it's, and I set it to max-players=10 but was max-players=20, I also have 4GB's of RAM, and so far I've had no lag when I let an old friend of mine join the game. Is there a max limit to how many people would be able to play on 4GBs without lagging and/or crashing? I don't really want to bother buying a server online for MC as I just like to play mutiplayer with others for fun.

I like to dedicate 100mb per player on my server. I run a 6GB server with anywhere between 25-30 plugins and 30 player slots. After all the plugins it leaves me a little under 4Gigs which I dedicate solely to players. I've never gotten any lag complaints so far.

Yes! Set a certain amount of RAM aside for players. Say on your 4gig server set 2 gigs to players and 2 gigs to everything else. This should handle 20 players easy. Simply setting your server to a high amount of slots won't cause it to crash. If the slots actually fill up then you might have a problem lol. 80 full slots on a 4gig server with plugins will overload and cause it to shut down. It's really just trial and error imo. Find out how many players you can handle without crashing and set your server to that amount.
