I was wondering if I would have to reset my server map when 1.3 comes out. I might do this because I heard that there wont be emeralds and all the other 1.3 generated stuff in the chunks my players have explored and the only way to find the 1.3 stuff was to go to the ungenerated stuff. Is this true?

Thanks. Is there any thread/page that says we're going to map reset?

Are all other servers going to have to do this? Even the big and popular ones?

Some copy/paste with worldedit or McEdit, but most servers will, yes.
It's also nice to have a cleanup of the random abandoned builds.

Yes and no. Only newly generated chunks will have emeralds, however you can trade villagers for emeralds. In the snapshot I played with the villagers would for example want 27 paper for an emerald, and then you could (as many times as you wanted to) trade them paper for an emerald. That needs to be fixed IMO, I don't even know why you would go looking for emerald ore with this setup unless you wanted to get it with silk touch.

As for the other new toys (ender chests, cocoa bean plants, hook & wire), I believe you can either craft or find them grown someplace on the map.

The main reasons to create a new map are:
    - An excuse to compress your world file
    - Clean out old and mined out chunks, creeper holes, etc.
    - New End/Nether worlds
    - Easier to find emerald ores, less reason for exploration/map growth

The main reason NOT TO would be that players will be upset, and want all their crap copied over. Depending on your server population and their building habits, this could be a huge or minor issue.

So the answer again is yes and no.

I think what we're going to do on my server is force everyone to a new world with no inventory, and give each user 1-3 requests based on rank for things to be copied over. This is to add the emerald ores, and because our world is 5GB currently and I'd like to trim it down. I'll also probably install world borders while we're moving.

Thanks, this is the kind of info I was looking for. Really helpful :)

Does having a smaller world border decrease lag? Im also just curious, but what will the size of your world border be?

The first question is not easy to answer precisely. I think it's based on how many players are visiting different parts of the map, causing those chunks to get loaded into memory, and on hard drive speeds/etc.

I'm not sure what size I'll be using just yet. I want to use a circular shape, probably somewhere around 5,000 to start, expanding it when necessary.

The main thing I want to avoid is players wandering out to -30,000 (which has unfortunately happened...) or some insane number just to find mooshrooms. If they are actually using land, then I don't mind that much.

What I'm going to do is use Multiverse or some other multi-world plugin to generate a new 1.3 map for players to choose to cross over too. They will have the same inventories in both worlds, so they can mine emeralds or collect other items in that world, then come back to 1.2 map. Can someone please tell me if this would work?(I'm a server newbie).
