    Hi,

I absolutely love the bukkit project, in only a few months it has blown hMod out of the water. The community is rich with involvement from devs, plugin devs, server admins and users. Its just great!

Except for one thing.. Permissions! Im not referring to a specific plugin - instead the overall concept and implementation of a global permissions system. Currently this is in shambles!

I ported to bukkit from a very successful and consistent hMod server, i made the switch when i found a plugin that promised simple permissions transition from hMod - Not the case. After several hours of messing around finally go it to work, only to have the plugin abandoned by the dev a few weeks later.

So then i moved to the plugin Permissions, which meant a painful afternoon of reading and testing and reading and testing. We had a good run and it seemed like the community accepted permissions system.. Again the plugin is dropped by its original dev, picked up by a new one. As a result i ditched it.

So now im onto Essentials new permissions/group/user system. And again i'm in the position of having to re-learn and re-do my whole permissions system!

I feel even more sorry for the plugin devs who have to pick a permissions plugin to support, hoping that it doesn't get canned. While there is the generally accepted 'permission nodes' its still far from set in stone!

I remember at the beginning of this project, when the forums were young, seeing one of the key devs saying that bukkit was going to have a native permissions system built in (i was hoping to quote for dramatic effect but cant find the post[IMG]).

All i want is an official system that all plug-in devs and server admins can adopt-set-forget! Please can this be priority number one!

Bump this if that what you believe!

    Best,

    Jorks

You could just continue developing for Permissions (now developed by TheYeti), or use GroupManager which works with almost all permissions based plugins.

As for bukkit adopting a permssions system, it already has one. It's already been coded and added to the bukkit code. The only problem is that it hasn't been linked to users yet, so it's effectively useless. All I can tell you is that you'll definitely see it by or before the final release.

i think the bukkit-permissions will release with the final version of bukkit.

Minecraft is still in beta so how long do you think its going to be before there is an official launch of Craftbukkit?

I dont see why there is any delay... Its a vital part of any successful open SMP server. If its been coded and sitting there dormant then let me at it so i can start testing and helping its development along.

The earlier its introduced the more its adopted it becomes, which in turn means the more tried and tested it gets. Hence resulting in a better long term solution.
