the /give command

i have looked around on the forums for some time and i cannot find a documentation of of how the /give command works. I have also checked the source code for bukkit and minecraft servers, but I cannot figure out what class it is in, let alone how it works. could someone please post:

1: the path and classfile that it is in.
2: the code.
3: how the code works.

When this is all done, this thread will be as much of a help to other people looking for this stuff just as much as me.

EDIT: okay, let me rephrase this. i need to put the /give command inside a spell somehow, using the MagicSpells Plugin. which code would i use?
