I am a bit hesitant to reply, but then again this thread does seem alive and well again.
Have you actually tried that? I was going to do it as a weekend project a while back :p

Not for minecraft, though KDE performed very well after a lengthy compile time. I would set aside a week or so to get it up and running depending on how fast your hardware is (i used a Core 2 Dua T7200 2GHz laptop)

Doesn't seem like a project for my Pentium 4 1.8ghz home server. Then again I don't need KDE for that. In fact its only really running ZNC and Jenkins/Tomcat with a bit of Apache/MongoDB/Ruby/Node on the side for occasional tests. But now I can do most of those on my laptop as I use Ubuntu full time now :)

Any non-desktop version of a linux OS.
If you're running a Minecraft server on a computer/server with a GUI, you're doing it wrong.

    I don't understand you guys.
You are trying to show me that unix systems run for long ass time... Didn't I say that?
When I say "weeks" it does mean (1;+ ) weeks.

I was agreeing with you and providing further evidence to back up your point. Take it or leave it.

All of my Windows servers only get rebooted to apply security updates. So typically once a month. The same is true of my Unix and Linux servers. If it wasn't for the updates, both would run just fine for years.

Back before regular patching was the norm, it wasn't uncommon to find Windows NT 3.1/3.51 systems with uptimes in the years. We often feared rebooting them because it wasn't uncommon for a system to appear to be fine only to find a hardware failure during the reboot.

Why pay for Windows when you can have same or better performance on unix?

Planning on using Debian with Xfce. I don't need a GUI but I also don't feel comfortable without one (someday I'll get over my fears, but not likely any time soon). But that's only once I get enough cash together to get all the parts from Newegg, and then I still have to find the time to build the darn thing.

I had a lot of issues with debian and java 7, so i switched to ubuntu 11.10 and had it setup in 10 mins =)
So ubuntu has my vote over debian...

I have had the exact opposite of you and beg to differ.

I have been running Debian and Java 7 on all of my Minecraft servers for over a year, with ZERO issues. On the other hand, I was once forced to use Ubuntu and I had so many issues with it, that it was not even funny. Thank god I paid $30 and moved back over to Debian and have no issues once more.

Finally, you do realize that Ubuntu is built off Debian lol.

Exactly. And Debian, although there is only one release every 1-3 years, is rock solid.
Also, I'm surprised no one has told me that Xfce (which I love) is crud yet, and that I should use GNOME/KDE, which are just as bloated and unnecessary as Windows 7 Aero if you ask me. (You can probably tell I prefer things that are lightweight and highly stable, as opposed to cutting edge and shiny :D )

:p All GUI's are crud, you should be using CLI.

I don't even know what CLI is :D
I'm running Debian for my server now, works just fine really. Used to be on CentOS, but that was back then. Not anymore :)

Sigh, young people these days. In my day, we typed our commands going uphill, in the snow, both ways. [IMG]

EDIT: Work just got allot brighter. Thanks BoddyD!
