I suggest you check out some youtube videos first. I started out by reading books but then I didn't really understand it. I believe that it will help to check out some visual tutorials first before getting all the technical details from the books. Here is a link to one of the tutorials that I found most helpful. They are in a series so all you have to do is click next tutorial after you are done:

After you've learned the basics, check out this page for in-depth information on using the Bukkit API and programming Bukkit plugins: http://wiki.bukkit.org/Plugin_Tutorial

Here's the Bukkit API Documentation: http://jd.bukkit.org/apidocs/overview-summary.html

If you need any help, just post it on the forums. :)

I'm pretty sure that Bucky has taught half of all Minecraft users Java. Not that it is a bad thing, I started out there, just that it's cool that one person has influenced so many others.

Not me, haha. I watched like 1 minute of the first video and got dreadfully annoyed by him.

Probably a lot smaller percentage learned Java like I did and that was through going into eclipse, installing the API and just going to town from there. I started doing it and learned Java along with the Bukkit API.
