Hello bukkit community, I am about to open a server and I ordered a dedicated server, I want to know how much slots I should open for great performance for each player, here are my server's caracteristics :
    • CPU : Intel Xeon E3-1270 Quad core(8 threads) @3.4GHz
    • RAM : 24GB DDR3 ECC
    • OS : Windows Server 2008 R2 x64
    • HDD : 2TB SATA2 Seagate Barracuda Green Drive ST2000DL003-9VT166
      • Runs at 5400 RPM
      • SATA 6Gb/s
      • 4.16 ms average latency
    • 100MB Network with around 80MB download / 56MB upload
The server itself will have 15+ plugins and 8 clientsded mods.

Knowing all these infos, how would much slots you guys suggest me to open for a good performance for each player, but also note that many other things will run on the same machine such as IIS Webserver with PHP/MySQL/Plesk Cpanel, teamspeak3 server, etc.

Some guy also told me that on a 64BIT machine, a "server" flag would help the performance but I'm not really good at that, I would like to know a good batch file code to run the server optimised.

All suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance!

    Cheers.

Imho, don't set it at its limits. When I see a server advertising with 200 slots, but only has 20 people playing I don't join. Set it to like 50-100, depending on how many people you want to attract, when it fills the slots, extend it. I'm sure you can run 200 or more slots on that server, but why allow 200 slots when you have 5-10 players at the start? :p Just my opinion tho

Well, those are hella slow drives, so you will have a big disk i/o bottleneck when you start loading up with tons of players.

Each server is configured differently and depending on their specs and plugins, the slots can vary, so there is no possible way we can give you an exact amount.. Best way to find out is to run the server and when you start lagging bad, that is where you should set the limit.

I have almost the same as you do. I can open plenty of slots but I would recommend to only use 50-100, when people see a server with 200 slots and only 50 people in it, they probally wont join. Unless your server gets really popular and won't lag with 150-200 people on it, go with 50-100 slots.

That pretty much kills any performance gain you might have had from the otherwise decent specs.
While on the subject, don't get any of the "Green" series harddrives.
