    Mojang have just released an update to Minecraft, bringing us to 1.2.4.

    This update is primarily a bug fix release but does include some nice improvements as well:
    Fixed:
    • Made placing half blocks on existing half blocks (to make a full block) easier
    • Limit framerate on menu screens, no longer uses 100% cpu and make my computer melt
    • Fixed fatal crash for converted worlds to anvil, when there’s blocks at max height
    • Fixed an old bug with signs clearing text while you’re editing them in SMP
    • Fixed crash when logging in while there are blocks at maxheight at spawn
    • Fixed TNT ghosts in multiplayer
    • Fixed storage minecarts dropping enchanted items
    • Fixed crashes on invalid server addresses when joining a server
    • Fixed entities being uninteractable if they existed at login (Multiplayer)
    • Fixed dupe exploit with paintings
    • Fixed furnaces and dispensers dropping enchanted items
    • Fixed the “flickering” of chat as it vanishes off the screen
    • Fixed text rendering over items in the container screens
    • Fixed exploit with jungle saplings (turns other saplings into jungle ones)
    • Fixed launcher opening minecraft dir if the path contains a space
    • Fixed an off-by-one lighting bug
    • Fixed block transmuting (turning one block into another via pistons)
    • Fixed placing mushrooms in daylight, where they can’t survive
    • Fixed redstone lamps dropping powered block items when destroyed while on
    • “save-all” (server) now works even when you have toggled “save-off”
    • Fixed turning half-blocks into full-blocks while you’re standing on them
    • Fixed seed displaying in F3 debug when the seed is unknown (multiplayer)
    • Fixed villager texture changing clientside per profession
    • Fixed falling off ledge corners while holding shift
    • Fixed players falling when reconnecting to servers where they were previously flying
    Added:
    • Chat history and much better chat editing
    • A few new decoration blocks
    • “Back” and “Quit” buttons to OutOfMemoryScreen
    • Made cats more realistic (read: probably annoying). I hope it’s enough to cancel out any joy you may receive from the previous feature!
    • Added a “minimal” debug menu for testing with. Shift+F3 to hide the graphs.
    This is just a short announcement to let you know that we are aware of this and are working on it as I type this. Please note: Minecraft 1.2.4 has bumped the protocol version, so it is incompatible with 1.2.3.

    Thanks for your patience and understanding.

    To all the people saying we server owners are bitchy lisen here put yorself in out shoes we have ALOT of angry players and complaints and we have lost ALL of our donators while we have to pay for VERY exspensive programs to make our server lag free and 24 hour and to stop our pcs dying under all the pressure. BUKKIT DO NOT LINE OUR POCKETS RIGHT NOW IM IN DANGER OF STOPING MY SERVER AND IT NEVER COMING BACK all of people work and effort GONE all cause we cant update so we cant get donations so we cant pay for the things we need for the server to be online so if you are just a whiny player who wants to bich at us for caring go ahead maby we will close down ALL of our servrs and you will never play online again and then you will know how it feels. this was a fairly small update so i know as a mod maker it takes only a few hour to update and reprogram then upload it to the internet. and this is on person working on it you have HUNDREDS of people so getoff your asses and get to your computers for godssake and do something IN TIME for once.

    p.s mods are still a bit more complicated than this so it would not take THAT long

    we ask for donations for the VERY pricey cost of the software it takes to keep the servers up, we cant live off it there is berly anothe of it to keep our servers up as it is

    That is not the Bukkit teams problem. The Bukkit team is not here to make sure server owners have servers. They are coding a free mod for a game. Go ask any gaming clan or organization how they keep a server up/website. Not by asking or pleading for donations.

    Not saying its wrong, just saying you can't complain as soon as a Minecraft update comes out.

    I've been there as a server owner. Like TNT said tell you players not to update. If they don't listen oh well for them.

    I ask for, and enjoying using my donations to pay for my server hosting costs. However, I FULLY expected to have to pay for the ENTIRE cost out of my own pocket before I started up my server. I have been pleasantly surprised to see my costs being covered by donations.

    You shouldn't rely on donations to keep you running. If you do, that's entirely your choice, but I'm afraid no one owes you anything for you making that choice.

    Just send the users my way then :), we dont have any major issues regarding updates to minecraft, and we run 1.2.3 on beta build. beta build = stable with bugs.

    I do not loose any players while waiting for updates, sometimes we actually have a peak at players online right after minecraft releases, even though ppl have to downgrade or wait with updating, the users in our community is generally very understanding.

    Your problems sounds more like, that you dont spend enough time teaching, and explaining what happens when a new update is released by minecraft, i always inform my players about pending updates, and what no to do, including making post on our website, however i can do that better, but it doesnt seem bad compared to what you are explaining.

    And people only forget not to update the first time, next time they learned it, and will keep playing as if minecraft havent released a new version, and we spend time helping users to downgrade to earlier version(even though im not sure about the legality of that).

    Generally people just need to stop with the whining/bitching/hating, and let the devs have peace to update and fix bugs in bukkit.
    People have to remember, that if it werent for bukkit we wouldnt have such great options, bukkit is free to download and use, including the tons and tons of plugins, various developers have put hard time into making, so we all can get a better and more customized minecraft experince.

    If people do not like the hard work put into bukkit they are ofc always free to run their server with vanilla minecraft server.

    I have nothing but respect for all the developers who put their free time into developing bukkit, so we as server owners have more options, even if there is several areas where things could be improved, i am still very happy about what have been done in terms of bukkit, and the hard work put into it.

    So i have nothing but the highest respect for the bukkit staff, and i highly appriciate the hard work put into it.

    And i say this, to show the bukkit team, that not all server owners is ungratefull, and ignorant of the hard work you guys put into it.

    i
    dont disrespect them but you need to know alot of people CANT downgrade their minecraft and its not fair on them or us as we work hard on our server but now we needed to leave it unupdated and people are upset and angry i only want what is best for my players

    For gods sake people, release a recommended build of 1.2 so I can update! I've been stuck on 1.1 with a bugged and broken and empty server because I can not use a dev build of 1.2. They are all faulty in some way and thus, not recommended. We need a recommended build so devs know what to update their scripts to and we can ignore every update after that until minecraft releases yet another update to break all things.

    well they do say that the are and i quote "reliable and up to data" so we have a right to complain about our players being unhappy with the standered when they are ment to be with mojang now so they had weeks in advanced to fix it

    a
    nd also my server is on 1.2.3 but my players cant downgrade and we cant keep up to cost its hard when i work all do and so does my team but we need to make players happy with the server therefore we need it to be up to data the dont even have a 1.2 RB yet so i have a right to complain

    i want the best for my users also, but i dont have any angry users. i explain to them how it works, and hopefully they wont update next time, and its not a 6 player server im running, i have a community of players to service, so i know the issues, but im not giving any hate over it.

    and i still support bukkit devs, and think they do a great job, and with the minecraft api things will become better in the future, also people have to remember that the devs just "landed" at their new job, and they most likely have a lot of personal stuff they need to figure out, if they have to move etc.

    This is still a hobby project. It is not an official Mojang project. As such they have to use the same tools as everybody else to update it - while having access to the source would help them, they cannot use that code when integrating Bukkit - they have to do it like everyone else.

    The Bukkit team doesn't owe you anything. They work damn hard to get this working for you, and work at it constantly - often missing out on sleep. Just cut them some slack - if you want 1.2.3/1.2.4 support so much, use a damn development build and put up with the bugs - and report bugs to the Bukkit team so it can be fixed.

    I strongly recommend you put up a test server. You'll find you can update much easier when you know before hand whether your plugins/server will break or not.

    Anyone can, they just need to know how. I wish you the best of luck with your server, and we understand your frustration. However, this is what it takes to run a CraftBukkit server.

    Thats why there is BETA builds, its so we have something to run on if we cant wait, for a perfect release, if your server is so sensitive to updates perhaps you should Downgrade your server so your costs aint so high.

    Also from the speed of updates it may seem like there is going to be a beta build of 1.2.4 very soon.

    as i said before, if you dont like bukkit, and the work they put into it, just run without bukkit, you dont have to have bukkit, you could code your own custom stuff for the official vanilla minecraft server.

    Bukkit is not made for servers to make money, my server is not run to make money, and if someday we dont get enough donations anymore, which i hardly doubt, we will just downgrade our server hardware to something much more cheap, and run with fewer slots.

    People saying it isnt Bukkits place to worry about our servers? Arent we the reason that Bukkit got hired anyways? if it wasnt for us forking repo's, making server mods, even just joining a server, Bukkit wouldnt have any use to do any type of programming. This was a unnecessary update, IMO. Notch Musta NODDED the go ahead to ZEB, lol all this headache over a few new Wood Blocks? I'm thinking this might have hurt MoJANG. Why Should we have to Downgrade or server?, Wasnt this a Official Update? With that Chat update, which i cant even freaking log in to see what it looks like, I would say this was more of a Server-sided update(Multiplayer), so i think they shoulda had a Bullit update to go with it, You know since they do work together now.

    public class Mojang(){
    Mojang ud = new Mojang;
    if(ud != timely Bukkit updates) {

    system.out.print("Screw MC, i know of another Java Game");
    }else{
    System.out.print("MC ROCKS")
    }
    }

    Talk so Notch will understand us.

    I absolutely disagree with everyone who has posted here saying that staying on an older version of the server doesn't affect their servers. You're keeping new users from being able to connect to your server. Maybe your small close knit group of friends is willing to stay on the old client in order to access your server. However, many people are upgrading their client and when they connect to your server they can't get in and move on. You're losing users you don't even know about yet, and that does have an effect.

    Mojang can solve this very easily by coordinating releases to minimize impact on their end-users. There is no excuse for this, it's unprofessional of them to ignore a community this large and continue to break the protocol without getting all their eggs in a row. This could have gone smoothly.

    ye your right about users moving on, and it is an issue that needs to be looked at, but i just dont think it justifies the huge hate/whine in theese posts, and again bukkit is not here to make money/donations for server owners.

    Bukkit is an alternative option to the default vanilla minecraft server, and yes i agree that there is areas where improvements could be made.

    I'll say this again. THIS ISN'T MOJANG'S PROBLEM. This is a third party server mod, they owe NO obligation to Bukkit over any other server mod. With how Bukkit is updated, it isn't possible for work to have started on Bukkit before an official release. Mojang doesn't, and should not have to wait for a third party server mod to update.

    The sense of entitlement in this thread is sickening, as is the idiocy.

    The fact that there is any hate at all shows that Mojang screwed this up. If they had coordinated the patch release correctly, this would have been a transition with few hitches and very little shouting. The fact that this thread has generated almost 600 posts, most of them angry, is proof that something is wrong. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

    To people saying it isn't in Mojang's interest to keep Bukkit up to date. There are two good reasons it is, it affects hundreds of thousands of server administrators and hundreds of thousands more of Mojang's users. The second, the Bukkit team was hired by Mojang, there should be support coming our way now. Not, more of the same.

    Note: For the record I don't ask donations of my users to play on my server. And, I have never received donations. So, when replying to me, don't mention donations as if to say they're part of my argument because they're not.

    if it wasnt for Bukkit no one would play multi anyways, so the updates wouldnt be needed,
    and MOJANG hired BUKKIT, so it isnt no longer 3RD party

    You obviously have NO idea what you are talking about. Bukkit is not an official Mojang product. It was never intended to be and it will not be going forward. People obviously did not read the FAQ when Bukkit was hired which explained that Bukkit would remain independent. Unless you are paying them for a service you have no right at all to bitch about updates.

    1.2.4 contained a few really important bug fixes, and proper chat handling (which I love). If you knew the bugs it fixed, and the amount of work it took for Bukkit to work around them to give you a playable experience in 1.2.3. It was very much needed, even if you don't realize it or agree with the update.

    You could run a vanilla server - it gets released at the same time as the client. You choose to run Bukkit. The development of Bukkit/CraftBukkit doesn't allow things to be any other way. The releases come out as fast as humanly possible. You are most welcome to try to come up with something better yourself.

    Bukkit is still a third party application. Bukkit didn't change by Mojang hiring the devs, Mojang changed.

    Regardless if we're official / independent or not doesn't remove the fact that we have a lot of servers, users and amazing plugins that make Minecraft multiplayer worth playing. And, people are really enjoying playing on bukkit servers. Obviously, Mojang agrees or they wouldn't have hired the bukkit team. It should be in their interest, and the interest of the hundreds of thousands of their own paying customers who have chosen bukkit to make these patches as painless as possible for server administrators, plugin developers and ultimately their users. So, no, I think you're wrong.

    Thanks for trying to apologize for / defend Mojang. However, it is correct to place the blame on Mojang for not coordinating client patches with bukkit. And, if I made a fork of bukkit, the problem of Mojang not keeping us in the loop and prepared for sudden client patches would still throw a wrench in the works and lose players for servers.

    Ultimately, this is a process problem at Mojang, and can only be solved by Mojang taking a step back before a client patch and saying, "Let's have a meeting with anyone who has a going interest in this patch and work out a timetable for releasing this patch instead of just dropping it on everyone. Let's give them a chance to get their code and server administrators prepared for this."

    That would be the professional way to handle this. It could be conducted on IRC, or a mailing list. Plugin developers could be made aware of it and have been provided server builds to test with long before the actual client release occurred. Instead, we were just as surprised as the rest of you when it dropped, giving us no time to prepare.

    I used to have a server and it gave me with lots of stress and anxiety; I would have tons of immature players and have to deal with updates. One day I woke up and said, "Why should I put myself in this bad situation. Why should I have to worry or deal with this when it is not giving me any enjoyment watsoever. I gave the server to my friends to run it instead. I have never been so happy. Its like having a burden lifted off you.

    Crimsonhearteye, listen to yourself. If you have to create a hateful post like that, then maybe you should re-evaluate what you do with your time. You yourself have the choice to be happy and this is doing the opposite. I am going to give you a list of ideas of what you can do:

    1. Set aside your map and plugins and update your server to a vanilla server and generate a new but temporary map. Tell your members that your server will be in Vanilla mode temporarily once things are updated. Once theres a RB or a dev that works (im sure there is), then you can play your map and use the plugins once again. This way your members can still play and socialize amongst themselves while enjoying their favorite game.

    2. Have an event where you create a list of 10 other servers to visit and play with. There are some servers working now (probably in vanilla) and it would be a fun way to check out the millions of other worlds out there. Ive done this before with my server and we've managed to recruit some new members into our server. It also helped us come up with new building ideas.

    3. Create a place where your members can socialize at besides Minecraft. You can create a free forum website, create a forum thread at the minecraftforums, create a chatango.com channel or many other things to help your members keep in touch and updated with the situation.

    4. Along with Step 3, you should explore and check out other free, easy online PC games that you and your members can occupy your time with. Theres this free mmorpg I play called: Perfect World International. I also used to play Maple story and Lunar Knights. If you like action, there tons of great free 1st person shooting games out there to try out.

    5. Besides video games, there are many other mediums that you can enjoy. Listening to music is really fun (duh). Great place to listen to some tunes is www.pandora.com, they have a large cache of songs of all genres. Currently I have been listening to what I would like to call EPIC music. Music that is played in movies, shows, games where it feels very intense and thrilling. It is a collection of video game fighting scenes and epic music. Check it out!

    6. Besides video games, there are fun shows and movies to watch out there. Currently, I am re-watching Family Guy, Burn Notice, The office (older seasons), Southland and House. Check them out for free at www.hulu.com

    7. Hunger games, a great book, has their movie adaptation out already. I would recommend reading the book then checking out.

    8. I am a steampunk fan (what is steampunk? http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/553477-clockwork-town/page__fromsearch__1) and id like to share that with you and see if your interested. My old server: www.skyedenmc.com has begun working on a steampunk world and they are online and updated atm.

    9. Besides wasting time trying to entertain yourself, you can one-up yourself by helping your local community in a positive way. Research your local city .gov website and see if there are any positions available to help improve your community. Check out your local city hall and see if there are any free services you can do.
    Note: If you decide to do this today right now, I will donate $20.00 to you (I am serious). I also want you to write me an essay on what you researched, what you decided to voluntarily do, what was your overall experience and how did you help your community in a positive way. Bring a camera and take a few photos of you helping out and post them.

    Bukkit, once again, thank you for your hard work and continued mod service for Minecraft. Out of all the videos games, Bukkit is one of the few mod communities that is extremely dedicated and accomplished. Even though I do not play Minecraft now, I still support you guys in every way.

    you do know until it updates you can just download the smp server by mojang it updates with the update so for the meen time you/everybody can use smp untile craft bukkit updates to keep your players happy here is the link to the smp download

    If you're running on Windows and just want to set up a server easily, download Minecraft_Server.exe (802 KB) and run it.
    If you want to run the server on any other OS or without GUI it's a bit more involved (see this wiki article for a tutorial). First make sure you can use java from the command line. On Linux and Mac OS X this should already be set up but on Windows you might have to tinker with the PATH environment variable. Download and run minecraft_server.jar (621 KB) with java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui.

    and Bukkit is not just screwing around updating is Sooo hard because you have to update every single file there is And they are working soo hard every update should take longer and longer be patient i know this because i make some Small games for my family/school freinds so dont say that they are lazy

    they probaly was working well mojang was doing the new update as i said in the red section it takes time so stop being a noob because i bet you cant even code (no offence if you do code)

    And no you dont have a point you do but its all incorrect and just make you look bad so please dont embarrace your self

    thank-you

    jungalist81, You're one of the reasons I'm fighting to make Mojang notice us and clean up their act regarding the sudden client patches. You're a good server administrator who was dunked over and over by Mojang until you drowned and gave up. However, telling crimson to go read a book instead is a slap in the face of all server administrators who have poured their time and soul into their servers. They do it for love of their players and the great things they're building. Also, the suggestion you made to go pure vanilla overlooks the fact that his users would up and leave in search of a server running the plugins they're used to expecting.
