My thoughts: "Oh no, the undead are threatening Minecraft!"

You know, you can also take a dump into someone's mailbox. Just because people usually don't do that, doesn't mean they couldn't if they wanted to. You could bolt it shut or remove it, but then you wouldn't be able to get mail.

    1. How surprising the guy with the lulzsec icon is talking about DDoSes :p
    2. I don't really see how this is a minecraft related DDoS. From the pic, it looks like an old DDoS, or does it cause an overflow or something?

Looks like an simple default DDoS, but anyway. I run a Server, i like my users and they mostly like me. If we have any problems we talk about them, we dont start shooting each other ;)

With 1.8, the code that handles invaild packet requests - i.e most DoS programs - has been re-vamped after the release of the hacking client, Pickaclient. Pickaclient no longer is able to 'take down' servers with autospammer.

Was also thinking this, how ironic. Honestly, anyone can DDos. Its just happens to be one peen in an ocean of peens. On the internet, everyone is a tough guy.

But seriously, DDoSes can only last so long. The longer they last, the easier they are to trace. Far as I know, a lot of hosts have 'anti-DDoS' systems in place. Its also illegal, so if you can trace them you can do some serious damage.

They can only really DDoS you if they have a botnet. Otherwise they can only DDoS you from their home address or an internet café. Since DDoS'ing over a proxy is just too slow. So then you can easily get their ip and go to the authorities with it. Unless they live in like Iran :p If they have a botnet and are the real deal, then you're screwed.

    It causes an overflow

This is actually wrong. A DDoS attack is a large group of attackers, while a single attacker is a DoS attack. Also, you don't need a proxy to DoS, you can use other methods such as drive-by attack/unlock router or a global proxy.

That's assuming they are just trying to take you down by sending you too much info. There are more efficient ways to DoS/DDoS a service that could easily be done through a proxy. One of the best examples in Slowloris. With Slowloris, you can take down a server with just a few kilobytes of bandwidth, as long as the system is vulnerable.

Everything can be traced/tracked. It just depends if the authorities care enough to try.

No rational government agency is going to spend resource to track down petty internet catfights.

Well you can, quite honestly unless you own a large(we're talking about 200 people max at all times of the day)server, then odds are you won't have enemies that can attack you with a large scale DDOS. The worst I've been hit with was a DOS here in there, but those are normally sorted out by a neat script I installed on my server. Anyways, the point is, if you 100% know you're getting ddos'd then check your incoming connections. You may be able to find the ips connecting to your server. As for the consequences you want your attackers to face...lets just say you can take them to court.

True. That is indeed by assuming that. Because that is really the only thing you can't do much against. If they use other DDoS methods then it is easier to fend off by blocking ip's etc..

    http://www.riorey.com/

Something like that? Rather expensive imo. But it does work very well! I've read a in-depth article about it on Tweakers.net Which is a dutch site like Anandtech or Tomshardware. about 300,000 people are signed up at their forums etc.. Anyway they got DDoS'ed quite a few times and decided to buy a riorey, and of course test it. To see how good they are.

They got an English version of that article as well.

the simplest way to prevent DDoS on your server get a router with small linux inside or a linux host and it must contain iptables firewall, there you can add few rules to restrict amount of packets send by one ip address per time. Important that minecraft server must be behind this router or linux host to make this system works good (if you set up this firewall on minecraft host it will not work good)

DDoS... You probably mean DoS. Which are basically really sad lonely kids trying to be cool.

DDoS takes a bit more skill, or a bit of cooperation.
