I've spent countless hours on researching what could be wrong with my server. I will give you details the best I can and maybe someone more qualified can lend some advice on to what may be happening.

The longer the Minecraft server goes without a restart the worse the lag conditions get. I run a medium sized server with approx 34-40 plugins. I know it's a lot but I like to think I manage them all well. The server has 6gb of ram with an i7 cpu and I host through avantehosting.net. They've proved to be far superior to other hosts that I've used thus far.

Here is an example of what I am talking about via LagMeter:
This is when it's at it's worst. The Ram will also go up and down but will hover between 5%-20% free. It gets worse the longer the server is up.

Here is a list of plugins I use along with a description on anti-lag methods if applicable. ALL plugins are checked avidly and are up to date and reported working with CB 1185 Minecraft 1.8.1.
I also have NO console errors from any plugin.

    CommandBook
    NoFarm
    ColoredSigns
    AutoMessage
    FalseBookBlock
    FalseBookExtra
    FalseBookCart
    FalseBookCore
    Votifier
    iConomy
Ptweaks - Supposed to seriously help with lag but doesn't seem to do anything for us. This was also installed post issues hoping it would help so I am ruling this one out.
    http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/mech-edit-ptweaks-v1-3-remove-all-server-lag-1185.39399/
NoLagg - Also installed post issues and has proved only useful in keeping orbs under control.
LagMeter - So I am able to see the tps/ram screenshot provided above
    MyWarp
    MyHome
    HeroSpawn
    AutoSave
    CFBanner
    Minequery
    Transporter
    DispNameChanger
Spout - Supposed to have numerous lag fighting features.
    HeroChat
    KiwiAdmin
    Help
    LWC
    LWC-Economy
WorldGuard - I have a LOT of growths disabled as well as fire spread.
    WorldEdit
WorldBorder - To limit the map size. It's currently a 2000 radius sq map.
    ecoCreature
    Vault
    PermissionsEx
Permissions - This is needed with PEX? I am not sure how the superperms thing works exactly. I just know I cannot delete this and have pex function properly.
    mcMMO
    HawkEye
    ChestShop
    VanishNoPacket

If anyone has ANY suggestions please do share.
    Thank you in advance.

    Ptweaks didn't help?
Turn your server off, Re-install it. Then start it back up.
I think your see some improvements. Ptweaks usually drasitcly helps with Ram issues and lag.

    Note enough info...

How many players are on at that time?

EDIT: I see it is a shared hosting service, that could be your issue. Minecraft is not all about RAM, that was what everyone thinks these days. Sure it is matters a lot for Minecraft hosting, but CPU power is far more important. I bet you don't have enough CPU power with that host.

I've done so several times to no avail. I'm my hypothesis is that it's a memory leak with a plugin. However figuring out which one it is exactly is difficult.

My first thought after some research was HawkEye, however after removing HawkEye and restarting, I continue to have the memory issues. Even with 10-11 users online I drop to 10% memory after a short while.

Dedicated. It's not a Sandy Bridge, I am sure it's something very generic. But really insignificant to the issue, it happens even with only 10 people online.

I forgot to mention that lag meter picture was from the server only being up a couple hours and 11 people online.

Good lord, you are using almost 5 gigs of RAM up for only 11 players?! I am able to squeeze 20 players on 850 megabytes with no lag, even after 3 days straight.

If that is the case, then you definately have some huge RAM leaks via some of your plugins. I say you start checking them out. A good place to start looking, is at your logging plugins and mapping plugins or anything else that logs. Not to mention, upgrade your Bukkit.

Yeah it's getting pretty ridiculous. I tried HawkEye but was still having the same problems with it removed. Any suggestions on other specific plugins I have listed?

    Remove them one by one.
    Until you find it

hawkeye > water/lava flow logging is huge memory useage, disable it.
my server was using 8+gb in 1-2 hours.
disabled it and it was fixed.

I actually disabled that the day I downloaded it so that can't be the problem. :(

i also have some significant RAM usage, though not nearly what you are experiencing... I have found that McMMO ALWAYS caused me severe RAM usage, though I have not tried it in about a month so do not know if it has been fixed or not. I am currently doing auto-restarts of the MC server every 6 hours. I could go about 12 but want to play it safe.

I will be trying to diagnose the RAM problems this evening hopefully. It is always tricky because it irritates my server members, not to mention it is boring lol.

    My plugins are as follows.

    Code:
    Questioner : 0.4
    FalseBookCore : 0.88alpha
    WorldGuard : 5.3
    HeroChat : 4.10.3
    KitPlugin : 2.0
    FalseBookBlock: 0.88alpha
    WeatherControl: 1.0
    CommandBook : 1.6-customized
    iConomy : 5.01
    LagMeter : 0.5
    Spout : 1.0.6.403
    SimpleBan : 2.1
    WorldEdit : 4.7
    FalseBookIC : 0.88alpha
    Vault : 1.0.0dev-b41
    Minequery : 1.5
    NoCheat : 2.08c
    PermissionsEx : 1.14
    xAuth : 2.0b4.3
    AutoMessage : 1.5
    SpoutMOTD : 1.4.3
    Permissions : 2.7.7
    ecoCreature : 0.0.6c (Mo' Mobs!)
    dynmap : 0.23
    LWC : 3.52
    ChestShop : 3.12
    MyHome : 2.0.1
    Register : 1.5
    SpoutBackpack : 2.3.5
    WorldBorder : 1.4.3
    HawkEye : 1.0.5
    NoLagg : 1.26
    MobArena : 0.94.3.11
    Jail : 2.0.1
    Towny : 0.76.2.0

Try Ptweaks its better for Ram then NoLagg.
    Nolagg is better for CPU.

You can find it here Ptweaks

Your start script, and server.properties would be useful.

    THG3

I don't have a start script :( .. The minecraft server is Avantehosting.net and I don't have access to the starting script.
    However my server.properties are here..

    Code:
    #Minecraft server properties
    #Mon Sep 19 02:36:23 CEST 2011
    allow-nether=false
    allow-flight=false
    hellworld=false
    level-seed=
    white-list=false
    spawn-animals=true
    online-mode=true
    pvp=true
    difficulty=1
    server-name=Unknown Server
    gamemode=0
    spawn-monsters=true
    view-distance=5
    motd=A Minecraft Server
    server-ip=************
    server-port=25565
    max-players=80
    level-name=******
    @NotYetRated
Let me know if you get any significant findings. I will do the same.

I went through and re-confirmed all plugins were up to date. Also upgraded to the latest RB, and still the same problems. =[

One thing to remember is, unless you add command line options at startup, java will wait till ram is full until it frees it.
It's not a bad thing, though it does make estimating normal usage difficult.

That's an interesting point. I often wonder why people freak out when their server actually uses the RAM they so kindly offered it. Having all the busy parts of a map stored in RAM instead of disk surely does speed things up.

That said, we have nowhere near the RAM usage on our server in circumstances as described above by some, so chances still are that one or the other badly coded plugin eats up RAM as if there was no tomorrow.

I've brought it down to these possible options:

    Spout
    WorldGuard
    WorldEdit
    LWC
    iConomy5
    ChestShop
    LagMeter
    PermissionsEx

    It's not Spout
    It's not iConomy

Starting to think it's 1.8. I've talked to MANY server owners who experience the same problem since 1.8 has hit.

On my server we removed iConomy and still same problem. We don't use spout. We don't use PEX, we use Perm 2.7.4. We don't use chestshop. We don't use LagMeter (will have to look that up, idea what it is)

    Could be either
    • WorldGuard
    • WorldEdit
    • LWC
    But I would say it's 1.8.

My ram usage with 60 people is normally 1gb or less, until some point where it goes down and down and down... and it reaches 200mb left and server crashes. Then server reboots or something, then we got 6gb or ram left and it goes down again until I do a proper full restart.

We're hosted on Beastnode with 8gb of ram.

Try disabling lava and water flow detection in hawkeye. I did that and it fixed my memory leak issue. May be the same for you?

    Fiddy_percent

Spout had a leak for me. It doesnt show up very fast but over time it eats my ram usage
    the same thing with worldborder
    and ecoCreature

    THG3

    I've always had that disabled.

Yes I am thinking it's 1.8. All I can do right now is restart every 4-6 hours and hope 1.9 comes sooner rather then later. :)

  30. Offline

    Grimmy777

Well we are pretty much all are running 1.8 so that alone is not likely to be the issue. Do you have the same problem if you disable all of your plugins and then just run the lag meter and see how it handles?

W/e man, I was just trying to help you. Good luck anyways.
