    Nether - Super-Simple Nether Portals
    Version: v1.2
    Tested on: should work on all RBs 450+; tested on 766. DOES NOT work on 1060.

    I'm updating Nether very soon to work on 1060+ and also adding some nifty new features!

    I use Bukkit, but have no plugins except a bit of my own tinkering installed. When multiworlds came out I decided that the denizens of my server could use some Nether action, but every plugin I could find came with too many frills, so I wrote up a simple one to use. There is no configuration and no commands. Figured I'd post it here in case somebody found it useful. It's basically designed to be used when you just want to add a classic Nether to your currently single-world server.

    Features:
    • World coordinates are scaled 8x like in single player.
    • No configuration, commands, or persistent storage - drop and go!
    • Teleportation is smooth and usually lag-free (especially when the chunks on the other side are already loaded)
    • Portals are auto-created when teleporting through a new portal, carving a small cavern and placing a platform if needed.
    • Dying in the Nether teleports you back to the Earth spawn!
    Known Issues:
    • Portal frames are not detected, only active portals, so if you try to portal through to an inactive portal, a new portal might be generated a few blocks off.
    • Both sides of a portal must be uncovered or there is a risk of suffocation when teleporting in.
    • The area carved around new portals can sometimes cut into existing structures if you're not careful, though this is unlikely.
    • Ghast noises can still be heard on Earth in some cases (Bukkit bug).

    Changelog:
    Version 1.2 (April 13)
    • Portals no longer make a giant platform and air bubble and instead seek vertically for a suitable location (thanks Acru).
    • The Nether world name is now configurable (thanks Acru).
    • The Nether world is now loaded on startup instead of first portal use.
    Version 1.1 (February 25)
    • Removed some vestigial debugging methods.
    • Dying in the Nether now respawns players on Earth.
    • Fixed TSLPC.
    Version 1.0 (February 15)
    • Initial release.

    At present, portals in the real-world that are within 128 blocks of each other will sometimes map to the same Nether portal, since distances in the Nether are scaled 1/8th and existing portals are checked within a range of 16 blocks from the target coordinates. I've been considering toning down this threshold - 10 or 12 is probably the smallest "safe" distance before a single portal may accidentally end up leading to multiple portals.

    makes sense. was just a little confused when I went through a different portal and ended up in the same place.

    I put a portal at the bottom of the real world, went to the nether, where I was in a tiny (newly made) cave, then, when I use the portal, presumably pretty low in the nether, I go back to the real world, but I'm underneath the bed rock, at which point I fall into the skyhole and die, that nether portal has this same behavior every time. Feel free to look around (if there is room), join prime.jestservers.com, portal I speak of is all the way at the end of the hall down the stairs near the treasure chests that you'll spot from spawn (in the real).

    anybody else reading this, know this server.world won't be around long, so don't get too comfy.

    This is an issue I briefly encountered once before, but I wasn't sure of the cause. Make sure that the portal has solid flooring one level below the lowest obsidian (possibly below other flooring). I will try to fix this issue soon.

    Okay, got on your server and checked it out. I fixed under-the-map teleportation by ensuring the entire 2x3 area of the portal was clear on both sides - on one of the sides, only the bottom 2x2 area was clear, and this may have been pushing the teleport effect off the bottom of the map. Thanks for the feedback.

    ah, okay, cool thanks, that makes some sense, I'll leave a bit more room around my hand built ones :)

    Thanks so much for this plugin! So useful, so simple, so fun to use!

    Excellent plugin! I think the search distance for real->nether portals is a bit high, though. We have several portals that are some distance from each other, that link to one portal in the nether.

    i also think the search distance for portals could be lowered a bit. besides this, this plugin is great! i love it. so simple and finally i get to discover the nether with all its ghasts.... :)

    Someone know an addon for disabling Ghasts in Netherworld?

    Kind of sucks that you die and stay in the Nether. If you don't know where your portal is at, you can't leave. Also, people said they can make portals out of anything. Furthermore, if you log out while in the Nether, you cannot destroy blocks.

    A friend of mine died in the nether and spawned in a block (I use Towny, for problem see above). She died. And died and died. By suffocation. So she disconnected from the server and reloged. Now she stranded here:
    Desert of Bedrock
    In a desert only made of bedrock. Well, and day-night-cyclus. She could move freely.

    What is the explanation for this? Would be great to find out.

    Love the simplicity here! But the issue of "Dying in the Nether does not take you back to Earth" holds me back from adopting this outright. Will you try to fix this without depending on another plugin?

    Disconnected while in nether, after reconnecting I couldn't destroy blocks. :(

    So, we've noticed that my this only seems to work correctly one time after a restart. A portal is created and, presumably, to the correct coords. Taking that portal back does not return you to the one you entered and from there on out all portals go to 0, Y, 0 with Y being the only variation. Strange because this 0, Y, 0 behavior is exactly what the essentials plugin did for me. Anyone else experience this?

    How portal should look? Like in SP? cause it doesnt work.

    I just had a quick question. If I am in the nether and use General to /setspawn - this will not effect the spawn point of my normal world correct? I am on build 328 using general v2.1. Is there any issue with doing this next to a portal or when the portal is next to the original world spawn?

    @RenStrike
    This seems to be an issue with the other nether plugins too - I saw some people posting about this issue. Usually if you leave the nether and return you can remove blocks. Also, seems to have some spawn protection - so you may need to have op permissions to remove the blocks in that local. Try moving from the spawn and see if that helps.

    @mcfreak
    What build are you using? I was able to create the sp obsidian portal and go to the nether. The first time did take some time. Also, if you have the server running in a protected folder (like program files in Vista or Windows 7) you may need to run the server as admin in windows - to allow it to make the netherworld folder. You can either try running as admin or move ur server folder to a new location - create the netherworld (which is done the first time you enter a portal) and then move the folder back.

    I'm sure this is a problem for all Nether mods, but it's just that I enjoy your version so much I'm posting on this.

    Anybody else having trouble seeing the fireballs the Ghast shoot?

    its a problem withhin bukkit or the smp server itself, cant recall which it is but in the end it comes down to the same thing: plugin authors cant do anything about it

    Got many problems with this plugin. If I go through the portal it builds up the nether perfectly but when i go back through the portal it teleports me somewhere else in the map or I stuck in a block and die. When I die I´m still in the nether and the same happens again. Normally I die (happens in 99%).

    I used setspawn from General while in nether and it seems to work there and when going back to my normal world i still go back to my spawn I have set there.

    @patach
    yes Ghast fireballs are invisible. It's a Minecraft issue not specific to this plugin or even Bukkit.

    @Dr_Cox1911
    I'm a little confused by what you are saying, you build a portal in your normal world and get to the nether just fine, but going through the portal in the nether it teleports you elsewhere?

    SpaceManiac

    @KuhCouch This is a side effect of quitting while in a wall and rejoining - they are above the Nether and need to be teleported down.

    @Goblox Odd. Could any other portal-related plugins be intefering?

    @mcfreak Make sure you're updated to a recent build (tested on 325+). Build the frame just like in SP and set it alight, and walk through to teleport.

    @Dr_Cox1911 Let me get this straight, a) portalling from the Nether to Earth takes you somewhere nowhere near any portal and b) When you die in the nether you respawn inside a block. Correct? Do you have any other portalling or spawn-control plugins installed?

    Anybody having respawn issues (Towny, respawn-in-Nether) - I will work on this tonight.

    Anyway you could make this configure so the distance ratio is 1:1? :)

    then it wouldnt be "super-simple" anymore, for this you should look at nethergates or multiverse

    Thats right!
    I have many plugins installed but "Essentials" is the only one with teleporting functions.

    Thank you for the info. I will implement this and try this out.

    @SpaceManiac
    Thank you for the awesome plugin. I really appreciate the simplicity of this and how it imitates single player, easy to explain to my users :).

    CraftBukkit/Bukkit has a bug where you can't set the respawn point in another world, the World value in the Location isn't copied across. And trying to teleport the player in the respawn event will cause the player to be kicked with an internal error.

    The respawn-on-roof of the Nether is because minecraft searches for the top-most block to place the respawning player on in the spawn zone.

    If you respawn the player onto a gate, and then a tick or so later teleport them, the player doesn't actually notice the spawn even occured in the wrong spot.

    When testing this I ran into the following bug. Not sure if it's been reported or not. Basically, if I teleport into the nether, then disconnect, and then save and stop the server, upon restarting the server, and connecting, i find myself in the regular world at the x8 ratio location.

    Hope that was understandable. Explained it the best I could.

    Great plugin though. Definitely will put it on my main server once some bugs are squished, and when dynmap supports multi-worlds.

    This works great really simple and it should stay that way.

    I got this weird bug when the portal is created in the nether inside a cave then the blocks got protection that you can't destroy them without being admin. Like 8 blocks away from the portal then the protection is gone really annoying if a normal user now create a portal and the portal gets created in a cave and can't mine the stone around it.

    I got no block protection plugin and I only got this around the nether portal that is created.

    Kick ass plugin, updated to Bukkit 440 and got a message to nag you
    Code:
    [WARNING] Using the stupidly long constructor org.innectis.Nether.NetherMain(PluginLoader, Server, PluginDescriptionFile, File, File, ClassLoader) is no longer recommended. Go nag the plugin author of Nether to remove it! (Nothing is broken, we just like to keep code clean.)
