I've started up my own server recently so this is my first update problem. I have read the forums and all the warning messages informing me of the new 1.6 update telling me not to update so I can still run my server. So thats exactly what I've done. When the launcher asked about the update I clicked "Not Now". To my knowledge I haven't updated anything apart from a couple of plugins. The problem is that my friends get the "Outdated Server" error on login, but I can still login without any problems. Is this due to my friends running 1.6 trying to login to a 1.5_01 server. Any help would be appreciated.

Correct, they would need to rollback their client version.

I wish Notch would add a Backup & Update option and Roll back option so that when he releases a broken update like 1.6 users can roll back easily without depending on remembering to backup themselves, which is honestly beyond most people, or downloading potentially virus ridden files from the internet.

I lose a lot of casual users on my server after every update because they can't login and just give up and move on. How many people just give up on minecraft entirely because of these busted updates? He's really shooting himself in the foot. I mean, cmon, he releases a massive update like this a couple hours before he's supposed to take off for a party? The massive CPU usage bugs should have been easily found with even cursory testing. And if he doesn't have time to stick around to fix any unforeseen issues he should probably just put it off entirely. I assumed that when he formed Mojang and hired employees and management that the quality of releases would go up, not down. Hopefully they can get it sorted out before jetting off to E3 to collect a few more awards. I mean, I love the guy, don't get me wrong. I'm glad he's found some success, but as someone who provides a lot of resources for free to the players of his game in the form of a server to play on, he could at least do us the courtesy of a working release. Just sayin'

@Notch Put the champagne down and run your million dollar business.

Is there any way I can inform my users that they have to downgrade before they can login. I tried modifying the NetLoginHandler.class file but I wouldn't have a great knowledge on java and just ended up getting errors. I haven't got there e-mails so it isn't an option. Thanks for all the support.

I don't know if you can because I'm guessing the version check precedes any custom server messages, etc. What I would do is run a 1.6 server on the port they are used to connecting on...then just use a whitelist plugin to give them a kick message telling them to downgrade and connect on a different port (which would be the port of your actual server)

It does back it up. Go check your bin folder. When Minecraft updates it downloads the new version to minecraft-[versionnumber].jar or something like that. That file is never deleted, so if you want to downgrade, just delete minecraft.jar and rename the one with the correct version number as "minecraft.jar"

Are you sure that's not just from a mod installer you may have used? The HD texture patcher for instance creates a backup before patching the .jar file. Also, there is more files being changed in a minecraft update than just the minecraft.jar file.

I don't use mods/texture packs... often. I've got a backup from every update in my bin. Actually, I've deleted the older, pre-1.4 ones.

Downgrading my jar worked fine. The other things that changed are more sound files or images or something, I don't think it'll affect it.

I've honestly never seen this backed up jar file. I will have to do the update and check for it. And if it IS there, why not include a RollBack button?!

While I'm getting some good feedback from you guys. My function keys aren't working for minecraft. I've tried backing up my save file and deleting the entire .minecraft folder which worked for a while. But now it's gone back to the same old ways.

Hi, I have a 1.5_02 minecraft.jar file if you want... Or you could upgrade your server with build #812, but that build isnt working that well, and its not recommended. Im using it, maybe everyone should use it and just report bugs. Then I think everyone help the Bukkit Team!

The bukkit team is waiting for Mojang to release a fix, not for us to report bugs...lol

simple solution for those running servers with users that can't follow instructions (DO NOT UPDATE)

move your main server to a new port. bring up a vanilla 1.6 server on standard port, put signs in spawn calling them idiots and providing instructions for new port and downgrade.

about the only way i can think of to notify people

I have about 50-60% of users that updated, regardless of my warnings posted all over. I am now getting 5-10 pms a day about when I will update to 1.6 lol. Its annoying... but what can I do. I like your idea though , hmmm :p

You could give this a try, it's what Ive been using for 2 days now. it's a custom compiled craftbukkit build i made and it will allow 1,5 and 1.6 users to connect, haven't found any errors so far but it might crash for the 1.6 users once in a while (this is a modded 755 build so all ur plugins should work) but hey! backup ur server im not responsible for any damage ^^

Thanks but unfortunately i cant use something involving risks on a quite major server.

Lol well, i done that for my old 1.4 server back then and nothing happened, the only thing that could happen is people that have the 1.6 client could crash theire client, but it hasn't happened to the 20-25 people on my server yet :D And they all updated ^^ It even feels alot faster!

I see. Yeah i would on a smaller server but i cant do it on this one. Too much to risk and too much support i may have to deal with :p
