    Staff Update - July 1, 2013:
This thread is not from 2013. This thread is about the 2011, BETA version of Minecraft 1.6. There is no ETA for the 2013 Minecraft 1.6 update, as always. Please do not ask staff about when an update will happen, as they have no estimate for you. Again, this thread is not relevant to today's update.

    Update 2 - June 23, 2011 at 9:12PM EST:
    New Recommended Build #928.

This Recommended Build addresses a few API issues and provides Plugin Developers with more events to work with, allowing more awesome plugins to be made. Unfortunately, this new RB WILL break some plugins (mostly plugins that deal with controlling a player's movement - details can be found near the end of this announcement). As always, please be sure to backup your server before updating just in case!

See this post for more information.

    Update - May 30th, 2011 at 5:55PM EST:
Since the release of Minecraft 1.6, we've seen quite a few rapid-fire bugfix updates from Mojang addressing issues the community has noticed and reported back on. While we're glad Mojang are on top of things and getting updates out there quickly to improve the community's experience, this does result in extra work on our part since we have to re-do some of the work we've completed for the previous update. As a result, I made the decision to hold off on getting a build out for Minecraft 1.6 until we were able to evaluate the update and decide if that is what we feel we should do or not.

Over the weekend, that is what we have been busy doing. Unfortunately, I was out of town and unable to handle the situation as much as I would have liked, leading to a lack of communication on our part with you guys, our community. Nevertheless, my team was happily and diligently working on the update and in regular contact with me. Still, I would like to apologise for our lack of communication, I simply was not in a position to do so.

That being said, we have noticed a few issues with the update that we've been able to address, so we are leaning towards bringing out a build for Minecraft 1.6.5. Though this build may not address all the issues we've found, it is still usable and produces a playable server with a decent experience. However, I am not yet sure if this build will qualify for recommendation.

Please bear this in mind when using the build: it is not fully supported (though we welcome detailed, useful bug reports) and not recommended (we can't guarantee stability) to use. There are some Minecraft vanilla issues that Mojang need to address that are beyond the scope of our project to fix and we are still touching things up (like Nether/multiworld support).

If you want to use the build we'll be pushing soon, please backup your server and make sure you understand the risks before doing so. Once again, we cannot guarantee that it won't eat your cake or spawn tiny creeper babies that take over your world.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I'm sure we're all aware, Mojang released Minecraft 1.6 today (Thursday, May 26, 2011) around 5AM EST and we've been hard at work getting a build out that is compatible with Minecraft 1.6 out. Since the release, Minecraft has seen quite a few small bugfix updates addressing some unnoticed bugs and we've pretty easily kept up with them. Unfortunately, there appear to be some issues with the update that is making the game unplayable for SMP players, so we've decided to wait for a bugfix update before we recommend any builds.

Will there be a CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.6?
Given the reports of showstopping bugs present in 1.6, there's a high chance a new bugfix update for Minecraft will be out tomorrow or even several times this week. As a result, it is unlikely we will be releasing a Recommended Build for 1.6 until we have something stable to work with.

That being said, we recommend everyone stay on 1.5 for a while until the showstopping issues are fixed and we can get a new, stable, compatible build out.

You can already get CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.6.4, but it is unsupported and not recommended.

I'll be scouring the internet for further reports on how Minecraft 1.6 is performing, but preliminary research and our own testing has revealed it as unplayable due to chunks sporadically loading or not loading.

You are telling me that the most of all bugs in minecraft do not manifest easily, don't make me laugh.
Well I am a senior programmer and a development team leader and by the stuff you are posting here, you are a bad software engineer my friend, or a heavily misinformed one.

So, other then rage comments and ridiculous ramblings, how is build 815 working? Did this build fix the processor stress issue?

Also, a big thanks to the Bukkit Moderators and Developers for their hard work and dedications. Also, thanks for keeping us informed the best you can.

Job titles like that make me laugh. Most great software I have used have come from an enthusiastic person working out of a garage or basement. Any high priced degree means crap to the person who puts every waking thought into working with a language they love on a project they love. Actually the entire academic system we have right now is a real poor matching system for individuals and work period.

Hah, but why don't I tell you how I really feel?

Is anyone else annoyed by the fact that Notch simply doesn't realize he broke the game a bunch of times? I KNOW his official bug list is the Minecraftwiki one. Yet somehow, he's not seen that it lists about as many bugs now as it did prior to the bugfix. Not to mention, half of them are fatal and the other half aren't quirks like booster carts but things like "can't pick up item from cobblestone".

IMO, Notch needed to fix bugs as they came, not every bug at once. It's not a good idea, because you end up like this. Or at least, have a higher likelihood to end up like this when you do that. And Notch sees it first hand how much he derped.

PS. Does anyone else get the sense Notch is just a noob programmer with a good idea? I'm not saying I'm better or anything (I am a programmer), but it just seems to me that he can never really do something right.

Only the ramblings are really useful here, since discussing current minecraft or bukkit builds brings no help to development really.
The best code of course comes from enthusiasts. The best software as a package? Not really, take linux, which is great but that it is done by enthusiasts gives the users hell. Good coder != good programmer or developer. That's what high-level education is here for.

Well now that Notch has said he won't update for another week will bukkit release a stable build?

"Linux" is an umbrella for a lot of very different user experiences. The fact is, Ubuntu gives the user a very nice experience, even if they know nothing about it. Proof, I've got the grandparents of a friend using it with no problem whatsoever.

It has been updated to 1.6.5, Is it compatible yet? I've already been using it...... and it's working just fine....
Has it been fixed for sure?

Well sure, but Ubuntu is not a product of good coders in a garage, but professional and well educated company managers ;)

Well I want to thank the Bukkit folks for reminding me to remind my users not to update to 1.6 a full week before the patch via their global sticky. You likely saved me a big headache. We're still chugging along happily and we're in no great hurry for anything update-wise.

Noooo cares in the world! *rolls around in a soft field of 2*

There are companies and some quite big that provide computers with Linux pre-installed, not a big thing, and passing a regular windows pc into Linux with ubuntu a piece of next next next user pass I agree thing, so pretty easy and needs one cd and around 20 minutes to ready with the bells and whistles of M$.

There is really nothing to maintain on a user Linux workstation to write docs, view photos, web and a game or two, things like flash, java, auto updates, drivers, are all done without any user intervention, just like a regular M$.

That business puts food in my table.

    Into topic.

BTW, with a few quirks but I consider it stable for the most, bukkit 815 works pretty fine with 1.6.5, a few warnings but it goes well.

Which is why I asked the question, because I was curious. No need to not-so-subtly hate on Microsoft with your oh-so-clever spelling.

815 for me: teleportation between custom worlds is still broken. Teleportation within the world seems like it works, but I haven't tested directly. Seeing how my plugin is all about teleporting between different worlds, it's sorta a deal breaker :/

imagine getting thousands of messages a day with people who hate you, love you, want you to use their idea in the next update etc., it would be a bit stressful. Not to mention this game technically isn't even 'released' yet. Wait 5.5 months and then complain.
    Just sayin...

Haha jeesh, mine don't even need telling... only a dumb community or new people to the SMP scene would ever update without checking the server they frequent first. Oh, and also there are EXTREMELY easy ways to downgrade, I used to just provide them a FAQ on how to do so and that would work perfectly fine. It was worth the hour or two it took to compile and explain things! (This was right after the new launcher came into play, haven't done it since)

I like how all the fanboys told Notch to relax for the weekend rather than go into the office and release 1.6.5.

    I'm glad he didn't.

Well 2 of them didn't have the launcher and got updated without being asked (so they claim). So there was some "assistance" required, but I at least did my part by telling them all twice not to update so I retain full "I told you so" power (hah). Either way, the notice was good to have :)

I wasn't paying attention to the lead-in to that but it's obviously truf :p

I had a message for the full week telling people to not update...note this message was played for everyone every time they logged in. And they still all updated :p

But thankfully I don't rely on a ton of mods to make a fun server so it didnt break a lot of things.

I don't know about all of you, but I'm thoroughly glad the Bukkit team are laid-back. Sure, I'm testing 815 right now, but my live server is not going to 1.6 until after Notch has released stable betas and Bukkit has promoted another recommended build, and all my important plugins have updated for it (hopefully they all update for Permissions 3.0+ as well :p).

While the amount of bugs is a little aggravating, what a lot of people seem to forget a lot is that this is still beta. We're the beta testers (of a second level, even. Bukkit are the first-level for server). Get used to bugs, guys. The fact that Notch made such an effort to fix all the bugs that were piling up is at least encouraging, even if at first they do open up a lot more bugs.

I agree at the moment we are in beta but what happens when we are officially out of beta but a patch Notch does brings more bugs. With the way it seems to be happening now why would it only change once Notch says "hey guys we are no longer in beta"
