When I go to the bukkit site to download a development build it asks for a user/PW.. But I clearly don't have this as nothing worked.

But when I look at the file page (https://dl.bukkit.org/downloads/bukkit/view/00682_1.8.1-R5/) it says it has been downloaded 5,000 times.

I know there's DMCA drama and stuff but where did those 5,000 downloads come from? Are the development builds not up for grabs?

    edit: NVM im stupid

  6. connorlinfoot That's Spigot, not Bukkit. There is a difference.

Read again. There is Bukkit there.

  8. connorlinfoot They're Spigot, not Bukkit. Just because they claim to be Bukkit for some reason, doesn't mean it's true.

AdamQpzm They do have a bukkit_1.8.1-SNAPSHOT.jar in there... so, not sure if they worked on it, or what, but it's in there, so he's not wrong that it's in there.

From what I know: The downloads are there, the compiled versions have the same names as the ones from 1.7.10 and earlier, Spigot isn't changing its name to Bukkit.

  11. ERROR372 I have on my desktop called bukkit_1.8.2-SNAPSHOT.jar and when I run it it just prints out "Hello!" repeatedly. Does that mean it's Bukkit because I've called it Bukkit? No, of course it doesn't.

No, nor could they. However, claims that "Bukkit has been updated to 1.8" are still untrue - a fork of Bukkit has been updated to 1.8.

  12. AdamQpzm md5 has made Spigot and Bukkit 1.8, the downloads on on that page.

  13. bwfcwalshy Again, that's not Bukkit. That's a fork of Bukkit.

It is indeed a fork, but it isn't really something to be discussed on this forum in my opinion.

Spigot is the new Bukkit now?! Weren't we locking forums that were using spigot a few weeks ago?

aaomidi Yes we were, and moving threads to the Alternatives section.
And md_5 made a fork of CraftBukkit, Bukkit, and made a new version of Spigot.

  17. Might want to remind your fellow moderator of that ;)

They're hiding the fact that they're still redistributing DMCA content. @Wolverness's commits had not been removed.

Not sure if it's true but apparently it's no longer DMCA'd. Because @Wolverness can only claim it if it's code which is shipped with the official Minecraft Server code. Which it's not, that's why we have to compile it ourselves.

Again, not sure if this is true but that's what's being said.

If this turns into stuff about the DMCA then I will lock it. There are enough threads about that already.

You're partially right. Spigot's no longer DMCA'd but on the other hand, Bukkit currently is, but it was updated/distributed with Wolverness's commits in it. They should've removed his commits and replace it with a patch in order to avoid issues, which wasn't the case...
I'm not going to be expressing this any further.

This forum is "Bukkit Discussion". Spigot != Bukkit.

To my understanding: Spigot is still subject to a DMCA because the project had previously been issued a takedown notice, and thus the license has been permanently voided.

  26. I have not seen a statement about what of the Bukkit+CraftBukkit code bases they have recoded, nor have i checked it myself (...). But from their release process you can see, that they changed the way their fork/alteration of CraftBukkit is built and also the way in which the whole thing is distributed. They use patching technique in all ends, and you have to run all the process on your own machine (including deobfuscation of the original Minecraft server jar). So "getting the dev build" is more complicated, but not extremely complicated. I trust their ability to interact with their lawyers, so they have a valid license or at least have worked around the current DMCA (probably can't really know for sure without examining closely + legal advice).

    CraftBukkit is DMCA'd.
    Bukkit is not.

    Oh my god.

I don't know why all you guys care if its a fork of Bukkit, or not even Bukkit.. the bottom line is my server has been running Spigot for a while now after I switched from CraftBukkit, I have been using a custom Spigot plugin called Carbon for full 1.8 support and now that 1.8 is out fully.. why even use care if its Bukkit or Spigot anymore?

Most of us don't really mind, however, this forum is meant for Bukkit Discussion. It's not meant for other alternatives. Think of it as this: You own a car company (for example, Toyota). Let's say your company was going down due to a lawsuit for whatever reason. You wouldn't want Chrystler to just come in, and put all their cars in your lot, would you?

No but are you going to sit in your empty lot forever while all the chryslers are being sold across the street? Your car isn't being produced anymore and chrysler was even nice enough to update your car model and put it back in production without including the fancy upgrades that it offers. That way you can still have your Toyota...
There obviously isn't going to be an official Bukkit update to 1.8 so be happy there is one available. I mean, you can sit here on 1.7.10 forever while we are across the street bouncing up and down on slimeblocks if it is a pride thing.
