I have noticed now that CraftBukkit has been taken down by a DMCA that more and more people are trying to use Bukkit instead of CraftBukkit. When they do this they receive the error: "no main manifest attribute, in craftbukkit.jar" or something similar. If you are receiving this error it is for a simple reason. You are trying to use Bukkit instead of CraftBukkit. You may ask, "what is the difference?". Well Bukkit is the API that plugins use. CraftBukkit is the 'thing' that runs the server. So when you try to use Bukkit instead of CraftBukkit it will not work.

Since you cannot currently download CraftBukkit legally, you can no longer make a CraftBukkit server unless you download CraftBukkit before it was taken down.

I hope this helps, please let me know if I have made any errors.

It would be nice to have this as a sticky or added to the troubleshooting wiki/sticky.

That is what I have been thinking as well is if we can get a staff to sticky this post...

This thread is here to explain what causes the error. It isn't asking for help with solving it. The reason the thread keeps getting bumped is so that other people with this problem can find the answer quicker, rather than having to make their own threads on the same subject and wait for someone to answer.

If you are getting the "no main manifest attribute" error on your server, then re-read the first post in this thread. The answer has already been provided.

Come on man, you help out often. You know even as we repeat answers daily there will be another post asking the same question in no time. THEN, even when you post answers with links to tutorials or further help they are often not even read. :) Had to mention this sorry. hehe
Sticky or bump, many will continue to not read anything and just post the same problems over and over. This is why many people with problems have problems, they fail to learn/read.

  9. To demonstrate the point AGC-Intra is making, here's a list I made about the common ambiguous health error in the plugin development section. I'll probably get round to making one for no main manifest attribute, it seems the new favourite!

I'd say the number one issue I see repeated over and over is .yml file issues.
So many people editing .yml files with no idea.
Even when we help them and provide links to a parser/validator and/or tutorial they don't use em!
    lol :)

    Added manifest issue to wiki.

Thanks, but people are blind. I doubt that they will read the wiki if they don't even read this thread.

Indeed. Would hope people check FAQ's first, followed by supplied instructions/wikis. Then move on to the forum. But ya we know only a small percentage will actually do that. The others will just continue to spam the forum with the same old questions repeated over and over.

I made this Post sticky since there are still way too many people asking about this problem.
    I removed your Bumps though.

  18. @Tecno_Wizard You can't make it more legal to distribute by distributing it in a different medium ;)

I am trying to make a Bukkit server with 1.6.4 (its the newest recommended since the whole dispute with Mojang). I followed the directions, and my run.bat says:

    java -Xmx1024M -jar craftbukkit.jar -o true
    PAUSE

and I have craftbukkit.jar in the same folder, but when I run run.bat in cmd, it gives me this error:

no main manifest attribute, in craftbukkit.jar

I don't know how to fix it and I would like to get this up

ok so i have read this over and over gone to many locations for how to and such but none seem to answer the question i am having.
Yes CraftBukkit and Bukkit are different

one thing CB has that B doesnt is a .bat file

    • java -Xmx1024M -jar craftbukkit.jar -o true
      PAUSE
When you run this file it gives you the error everyone is having. My question is. Is there a correct file access for this?

instead of Xmx1024M is there a Zmx1229M whatever *example* that will work to run the now available Bukkit file? im assuming something has to work since "more ppl are using Bukkit due to legal issues" there has to be a command line that works or something cause all i get when i search how to get a server running is all nothing but the same. everything is for craftbukkit and no one seems to show you how to set up just regular bukkit.

PS if someone did have the files needed to get CB running perhaps dropbox might be a helpful tool to use >.> just saying

  22. Yes they are, but I don't think you know what the differences actually are. A simple way of looking at it is that Bukkit is for making plugins, and CraftBukkit is for running the server. The reason you can't find a command to start a server with Bukkit is because it's literally impossible. It's not made for that.

This is illegal and wrong. Please don't advocate infringing the copyright of Bukkit's developers for your own gain. :)

    Doesnt hurt to try :p

and as i lurk on this site i see there are links to tutorials on how to make this work. Final question. if i follow the tutorial will i be able to make bukkit run the server? thats the main reason why i want to learn how to do this is so i can run a server for a LARP group that wants to start doing a digital version of our group. I could always rent a server but if i cant get Bukkit working right it will probably fall apart without the special tools that helps keep things in check.

@LordMaverick Those aren't working as there are no downloads available like told. And everybody on here that shares a file that violates the DMCA will be banned.

  25. Yes it does. As I've already said, it violates the copyright of the developers who created it. Can you please explain how this incredibly selfish behaviour "doesn't hurt" and why someone should help you when you take that attitude?

Am I not able to install plugins like CoreProtect 2 and Nocheat plus or even have a MC server with any bukkit plugins now?

Sorry if I missed something, but I am a frustrated newbie who knows little about Bukkit/Craftbukkit!

  29. @Citysurvivor You can have all of that, the DMCA stopped the downloads of CraftBukkit not the plugins.
