So I set up a server yesterday.

I installed some plugins (Essentials, worldedit, essentialsgroupmanager, and worldguard) and my server seems to lag a ton.

I get an average ping of 13, and my upload speed is 29mbps.

    Anyone have some advice?

What kind of computer is it running on (desktop/laptop, CPU)? Wired or wireless connection? Operating system, and 32 or 64 bit? 32 or 64 bit Java? What command line? What else is the computer doing at the same time? How many players when it lags "a ton"? How much is "a ton"?

13 Ping is really good. Although it probably depends on your system.

Rogerzz It does depend on the system.

One thing to keep in mind with servers:
Amount of cores doesn't really matter much, Clock speed does.
Why? The core logic loop is singlethreaded.

That being said, try worldedit's stoplag functionality.
Animals and dropped objects all count as tile entities which all take up time on the loop, too many makes for VERY laggy server.
A good article on it (very in-depth and informational): http://www.sk89q.com/2013/03/improving-your-minecraft-servers-performance/

You seem to be playing minecraft, on the same machine the server is running off?

I have mine running on a dedicate dell power edge server with a 64 bit Xeon Dual core processor at 2.4 GHz. Also, got 4 gigs as well running Ubuntu server 13.04. Same issue. When I run a Vanilla minecraft server on it, runs fine. Actually people can't stop saying how smooth it is. When I run Bukkit. I get complaints about viewing distances (I have both set to 10). Basically, on Bukkit people can outrun the 'chunks' and the lag kills it. Also, posted a problem with doors, too. They stay open way to long. I love Bukkit but just wish these two issues could get resolved.
